If you didn’t know SNOW ❄️ is in the forecast. What does that mean for septic tank owners?
❄️ Cold Weather Septic Tank FAQ ❄️
Q: Should I be worried about my septic system freezing?
A: Yes! Especially during extended cold snaps. Proper use and insulation can help prevent freezing and costly damage.
Q: How can I protect my septic system in cold weather?
A: Keep using water regularly, insulate exposed pipes, and AVOID compacting snow or soil over your drain field.
Q: Is it okay to drive or park over my septic area in winter?
A: No. Driving over the tank or drain field can compact soil, reduce insulation, and increase the risk of frozen lines.
Q: Should I let faucets drip during freezing temperatures?
A: A slow, steady drip can help keep water moving and prevent pipes from freezing, but don’t overdo it.
Q: What should I avoid putting into my septic system during winter?
A: Avoid grease, wipes (even “flushable” ones), harsh chemicals, and excess water use, they can cause backups when systems are stressed by cold weather.
Q: What’s a sign my septic system may be freezing?
A: Slow drains, gurgling pipes, or sewage odors inside the home are early warning signs. Call a professional right away!
THURSDAY UPDATE, winter storm is on the way tomorrow!
This is our thinking as of Thursday afternoon. Not much change in our forecast, but some small tweaks.
PURPLE: Mostly snow, some minor sleet accumulation. Safe bet of 10” to 12” for our northern counties.
BLUE: Mostly snow and sleet, 6” to 10” of snow/sleet. Minor freezing rain amounts. If more sleet occurs, snow totals could be cut down some.
PINK: Mostly sleet and freezing rain (ice) with minor snow accumulations. Heavy sleet could pile up fast (3” to 6”+).
DARK PINK: Freezing rain (some sleet), this is *ICE STORM* level amounts. South Arkansas residents should be prepped for significant impacts.
If you take anything away from this forecast, please understand that this is not a slam dunk snowstorm.
Outside of our northernmost counties, we will observe all sorts of precipitation types.
This will be the gnarliest winter mix we have seen in a long time. With frigid air in place, everything will stick.
Expect significant impacts Friday night, all day Saturday, Saturday night, Sunday and Monday too.
We’re almost there guys! Stick with the Arkansas Weather Network for the latest.
We will have the final forecast update on totals tomorrow around lunchtime.
