🌳 The problem wasn’t in the canopy it was underground.

We recently conducted an assessment on a mango tree after the homeowner noticed it wasn’t producing like it once did and was showing signs of decline. While many tree problems become visible in the canopy, the real issue is often hidden below the soil surface.

Using our AirSpade, we carefully excavated the root plate to inspect the root system without causing damage. During the assessment, we discovered significant root rot affecting the tree’s ability to absorb water and nutrients.

A tree’s health starts with its roots. When roots begin to decline, the canopy is often the last place symptoms appear. By the time leaves yellow, growth slows, or fruit production decreases, the root system may have been struggling for years.

Regular root inspections, proper soil management, and early diagnosis can help prevent serious decline and extend the life of valuable trees.

Remember: Healthy roots = Healthy trees.

If your trees aren’t performing like they used to, the answer may be hidden underground.

🌳 The Hidden Danger of Planting Trees Too Deep 🌳

One of the most common mistakes we see is trees being planted too deep. A tree’s root flare the area where the trunk widens and transitions into roots should be visible above the soil line. When this area is buried, serious problems can develop over time.

❌ Oxygen starvation of roots
❌ Trunk decay and fungal infections
❌ Increased risk of insect infestations
❌ Development of stem-girdling roots that slowly choke the tree
❌ Reduced growth and premature decline
❌ Increased likelihood of tree failure during storms

Trees are not telephone poles. Their trunks are not designed to be buried. Excess soil and mulch against the trunk create a moist environment that accelerates decay and prevents roots from functioning properly.

Many trees that appear to be suffering from nutrient deficiencies, poor growth, or dieback are actually experiencing problems caused by improper planting depth.

We frequently perform root collar excavations using specialized AirSpade equipment to expose buried root flares, identify girdling roots, and restore proper growing conditions.

Remember: Plant it correctly , watch it thrive. Plant it deep, watch it decline.

🌪️ Hurricane Season Starts Today. Don’t Fall for the “Hurricane Cut” Myth! 🌳

As hurricane season begins, many homeowners become concerned about whether their trees can withstand strong winds. Unfortunately, this is also the time when misinformation spreads, and one of the biggest myths is the so called “hurricane cut.”

Let’s be clear: There is no such thing as a hurricane cut.

Many people believe that removing most of a tree’s foliage allows the wind to blow through the canopy more easily. In reality, stripping out the interior foliage and leaving growth only in the upper portion of the canopy can actually make a tree more likely to fail during a storm.

Proper pruning should focus on developing and maintaining good tree structure. Healthy trees should retain foliage throughout the lower two thirds of the canopy, which helps distribute weight, dampen wind forces, and promote strong branch attachment.

When foliage is removed from the lower canopy and concentrated in the upper one third, the tree becomes top heavy, increasing leverage and stress on limbs and stems during high winds. This practice often leads to broken branches, stem failures, and long-term decline.

âś… Proper pruning = structural pruning
❌ Hurricane cuts, lion-tailing, and excessive thinning

Before hiring someone to “hurricane proof” your trees, make sure they understand proper arboricultural practices and follow ANSI A300 pruning standards.

Your trees are valuable assets. Don’t let bad pruning create the very hazards you’re trying to prevent.

Remove weak, dead, or overextended branches to reduce wind resistan...

🌪️ HURRICANE SEASON IS HERE DON’T DESTROY YOUR TREE IN THE NAME OF STORM PREPARATION! 🌳

Pictures are what you don’t want to do, unless you want your tree to fail.

One of the biggest misconceptions we see every year is homeowners having their trees “thinned out” by removing most of the foliage or cutting branches back to stubs before hurricane season.

Unfortunately, these practices often make trees MORE likely to fail during a storm.

❌ Excessive foliage removal reduces the tree’s ability to produce energy through photosynthesis, weakening its overall health.

❌ Stub cuts and heading cuts create large wounds that often lead to decay, insect infestations, and weakly attached regrowth.

❌ When a tree is stripped of its canopy, it responds by producing numerous fast-growing water sprouts that are poorly attached and highly susceptible to breakage in future storms.

❌ Over thinning and lion tailing shift weight to the ends of branches, increasing the likelihood of branch failure during high winds.

Research has shown that healthy trees with proper structure and a full canopy often perform better during hurricanes than trees that have been excessively pruned.

The goal of hurricane pruning is NOT to remove all the foliage. The goal is to develop strong branch structure, remove dead or defective limbs, reduce defects, and maintain proper canopy architecture according to ANSI A300 pruning standards.

If you’re concerned about your trees this hurricane season, have them inspected by an ISA Certified Arborist. A professional assessment can identify structural defects and provide science based recommendations that improve storm resilience without compromising tree health.

That black liquid leaking from your palm isn’t normal. In many cases, it can be a sign of bacterial infection, internal decay, stress, or trunk damage. Palms may continue to decline if the underlying issue isn’t properly diagnosed and treated.

Arborists provide science based plant healthcare to diagnose the problem and recommend the proper treatment plan before it worsens.

In March, our team conducted an assessment on these Medjool palms that were planted just 2 years ago in extremely poor conditions, essentially in rock with very little usable soil. As a result, the palms were showing signs of decline and nutrient stress.

Using our airspade, we performed a root excavation, removed wheelbarrows of large rock material, and replaced the area with an organic soil blend along with targeted nutrients to improve root health and soil conditions.

Today I completed a follow up assessment, and I’m happy to report the palms are responding positively and showing signs of improvement. Healthy roots = healthy palms. 🌴

🌳 Healthy trees start from the ground up. So many time we focus on trimming our trees while neglecting the tree’s foundation. Too much soil and mulch around the base of a tree can do more harm than good. Excess buildup around the trunk traps moisture, limits oxygen to the root system, and can lead to trunk decay, fungal issues, girdling roots, and decline over time. Here is an example.
