Good evening and Happy Friday!
I often talk about just how many incredible people God has put into my path since starting Attention to Detail, and trust me I know how that may sound sometimes, but I promise it’s an understatement.
This past week I was blessed with a surprise lunch visit from one of my favorite people on the planet who just so happens to live in Canada- Eric Sawatzky!!!
For those of you who don’t know the backstory to how Eric and I first met it’s like something out of a movie, well at least to me it was, I was the damsel in the distress character, while Eric was absolutely the hero.
I had been reverse engineering every Drive Protected long form video on YouTube I could find.
The PPF training class that I took in Indiana had me questioning my decision making to say the least.
I was overwhelmed and really stressed out.
I had invested the majority of our small savings account at the time into buying a Graphtec plotter, 2 rolls of film, and the training.
I asked the instructor if he thought I’d be good to go to schedule PPF work when I got home from class and he said absolutely.
To say I underestimated the skill, patience, and talent it would take to actually do a presentable job for a customer would be the understatement of the decade.
I was lost. Frustrated. Freaking out.
I commented on a Silverado video Eric had made, and he commented back asking for my email address. Then we exchanged phone numbers, and the next thing I know I’m getting a video call from a guy that was YouTube famous to me, asking to see the truck I was struggling with.
More importantly he told me to calm down, and he said brother I was exactly where you are when I left the XPEL training in Texas a few years ago.
Eric is hands down the greatest installer I’ve seen or met so to hear he struggled too eased my mind.
He said do you ever work weekends in your shop?
Me: Every weekend. Why?
Eric: would you be ok with me coming down and showing you a few things over the course of a couple days?
Me: brother I would love that but I’m broke from the class, plotter, and film and I don’t want to waste your time.
Eric: No big deal I have enough miles on the AMEX to fly down for free. Just pay for the hotel and we’re good.
Me: you would seriously be willing to do that for me?
Keep in mind we didn’t know each other outside of messages and me telling him how awesome of a job he did on a hundred or so videos on YouTube.
He said absolutely, and ask your customer if he would be willing to wait two weeks for me to come down and we’ll do the front clip with PPF and then you can coat it.
I’m very fortunate with the customers I have.
The majority of which are much more like friends than customers.
He said no problem at all.
Not only did Eric fly down and train me, he did the work for me so I could recover a little cash, and not lose the project.
He wanted nothing in return.
How often does something like that happen in life or in business?
I am extremely blessed and Eric and I became the best of friends over the last few years, and I’m fortunate to be trained by a gentleman that is truly world class both when it comes to PPF and also as a man.
Eric laid the ground work and showed me things the industry does and accept that are absolutely not ok, and the things that guys like he and I need to change.
Don’t over promise.
It’s not invisible but when done right it looks great.
Stand behind your installs.
Never use pro bond.
I’m proud to say I’ve stuck to exactly what Eric told me to do and I’m so grateful that I had someone as talented as him show me the ropes.
Over the years I’ve got to witness things happen in Eric’s life that are so much more important than PPF or business (Eric is the proud dad of a 1 year old beautiful little girl named Oakley, who was born one day before my daughter Grace!). Due to his wife’s pregnancy and his new born little girl I haven’t got to see him in person in over a year, but this last Tuesday he drove a few hours out of his way to stop and have lunch with me.
I have no clue where I’d be in business without Eric’s help, and I’m blessed to not have to find out!
Thank you for always having my back brother and I’m so proud of the business you’ve built, all the work you’ve done in the gym, and how awesome of a Dad you are (I told everyone if given a chance you would be an amazing Dad, I was right 💪🏻)
I hope this project goes well for you brother and thank you so much for everything you have done for me and my family.
Our lives are better because of you.
