One of the most interesting gravestones in England can be found in Wi******er.

It belongs to Thomas Thetcher, a 26-year-old grenadier in the Hampshire Militia who died in 1764 after drinking contaminated "small beer" while overheated.

Back then, clean drinking water wasn't always easy to find, so people often drank small beer—a very weak beer with a low alcohol content. It was generally considered safer than water because the brewing process helped kill many harmful germs.

Unfortunately for Thomas, it wasn't enough to save him. After drinking the beer, he became ill with a fever and died.

His fellow soldiers decided to honor him with a headstone that mixed humor with a warning. The inscription reads:

"Here sleeps in peace a Hampshire Grenadier,
Who caught his death by drinking cold small beer,
Soldiers be wise from his untimely fall,
And when ye're hot drink strong or none at all."

But the story doesn't end there.

In 1918, a young American soldier named Bill Wilson happened to see the gravestone while stationed nearby during World War I. The unusual inscription stayed with him.

Years later, after overcoming his own struggle with alcoholism, Wilson went on to co-found Alcoholics Anonymous in 1935 and published a book about his journey in 1939.

Well this is certainly strange and AWFUL…
If you think you've seen it all in Bonaventure Cemetery, think again.

The Mongin Mausoleum is one of the most unusual tombs you'll ever come across—a five-sided pyramid built in the Egyptian Revival style that looks like something straight out of an ancient mystery.

But the mausoleum's story is even wilder than its appearance.

Originally, it stood on the Mongin family's property on Daufuskie Island. Around 1900, rather than disturb their loved ones' graves, the family had the entire massive stone structure floated across the water to Savannah in one piece. Imagine seeing a giant stone pyramid drifting across the river!

Then came a shocking chapter in 1989. Grave robbers forced their way inside with a crowbar and stole the remains of the family members buried within, along with priceless burial artifacts and family heirlooms. The crime stunned Savannah and remains one of the most disturbing acts of cemetery vandalism in the city's history.

From its incredible journey across the water to the mystery and tragedy that followed, the Mongin Mausoleum is a reminder that some of the most fascinating stories in history are hidden in our cemeteries.

First stone of the season for my project! I honestly don't know how many I've completed overall🤔 I would have to scroll through 9,000 posts to find the last one I did last year 😅 This stone is located in my second home, St. Mary’s Cemetery in South Glens Falls, NY.

Project Angel Wings is something I started last year where I visit local cemeteries to clean children's stones.
