Has your Windshield ever gotten so dirty that your wiper fluid just wasn’t enough to clear your view?
Has there ever been something sticky, be it a sticker or tree sap, stuck to your windows and the glass cleaner at the gas station just won’t get rid of it?
There’s an easier solution than Windex and excessive elbow grease. A steel scraper or utility knife.
The MOHS scale is a ‘rough measure of the resistance of a smooth surface to scratching or abrasion’ (Britannica.com) and ensures the safety of your windshield in this technique.
Steel has a MOHS between 4-4.5, the windows of your car have about a 7, and your windshield rates around 6-6.5.
What this means is that steel tools are not strong enough to scratch your windows.
While we would never recommend trying to disprove this scale by attacking your Auto Glass with the corners of tools (Car windows are designed to break btw), steel scrapers are the best tool to calmly clean your windows of stubborn obstructions.
