If stink bugs cover your windows every fall, waiting until they are inside means you missed the best prevention window.

As temperatures eventually cool across North Alabama, stink bugs and other fall-invading insects may gather on buildings and enter protected spaces through openings around windows, doors, siding, soffits, vents, and utility lines.

If your home or small business has a history of this problem, start outside now.

Check:

• Window and door weather stripping
• Torn or loose screens
• Gaps around pipes, cables, and utility lines
• Openings around siding, soffits, and fascia
• Garage-door edges
• Crawlspace access
• Exterior vents that need properly fitted screening
• Areas where insects gathered during previous falls

The goal is not to seal required drainage or ventilation openings. Repairs need to fit the building and the location.

Preventive exterior service may also add value when completed before insects begin gathering and entering, provided the treatment fits the property and product label.

Already finding stink bugs indoors? Vacuuming is generally preferable to crushing them because disturbed stink bugs can release a strong odor and may stain some surfaces.

No service can guarantee that every insect stays outside. The practical goal is to reduce entry opportunities and act before a familiar seasonal problem becomes an indoor invasion.

If this happens at your property every fall, contact Safer Pest Solutions now to ask about getting preventive service on the schedule: 256-606-3094

Don’t wait until the “ladybugs” and stink bugs are crawling across your windows.

Cooler weather is beginning to show up in North Alabama’s extended forecast. If your home gets invaded every fall, the time to prepare is before that first real cool snap—not after the insects have already entered wall voids, attics, and living spaces.

The “ladybugs” gathering on homes are often multicolored Asian lady beetles. They are beneficial outdoors, but they can become frustrating nuisance pests when they enter buildings in large numbers.

Brown marmorated stink bugs also seek protected places as the weather cools. Crushing them indoors may release an unpleasant odor and can stain some surfaces.

Fall preparation should include checking:

• Door sweeps and weather stripping
• Window and door frames
• Torn screens
• Soffits, fascia, and roofline gaps
• Vents and utility penetrations
• Crawlspace doors and foundation openings
• Garage doors and attached storage areas

If your home or business has a history of fall invasions, now is the time to get an inspection and preventive service on the schedule.

No treatment can honestly guarantee that every insect stays outside. The goal is to reduce entry opportunities and address the exterior before pests begin settling into protected spaces.

Remove what pests need.
Repair how they enter.
Treat only where treatment adds value.

It may still feel like the middle of summer, but this is a good time to start looking for the openings rodents may use later.

Mice and rats do not need an invitation. They need an opening, food, water, and a protected place to hide.

Before fall arrives, take a few minutes to inspect:

• The corners of garage doors
• Crawlspace doors and foundation vents
• Openings around pipes, wiring, and HVAC lines
• Damaged screens and door sweeps
• Pet food, birdseed, and grass seed stored in bags
• Cardboard and clutter that make inspection difficult
• Evidence such as droppings, gnawing, nesting material, or rub marks

Not every opening should be filled with the same material, and sealing a building before understanding the activity can create new problems. Good exclusion starts with inspection: identify the animal, determine how it is traveling, and choose a repair that fits the opening and the structure.

Rodent prevention is not just putting out bait.

Remove what pests need.
Repair how they enter.
Treat only where treatment adds value.

Before you unpack for the weekend, give the bed a quick look.

Heading out from Blount, Cullman, or Morgan County for Labor Day? A few simple habits can help reduce the chance of bringing bed bugs home.

Before settling in:

• Keep luggage off beds and upholstered furniture. Inspect the luggage rack before using it.
• Use a flashlight to check mattress seams, bed-frame cracks, and accessible headboard edges.
• Look for live bugs, shed skins, and dark spotting—not just something that looks like a bite.
• If you find something suspicious, photograph it and notify the property manager before unpacking.

Back home, inspect your luggage before putting it away. If you suspect exposure, keep belongings sealed in bags until they can be inspected or appropriately treated.

Bed-bug concerns can make it hard to relax. You deserve a calm answer based on evidence—not embarrassment or a rushed diagnosis.

These habits matter for families, business travelers, and anyone managing guest accommodations.

A roach in the kitchen and a “water bug” that wandered through the garage are not automatically the same problem.

German cockroaches depend heavily on human buildings for food, water, warmth, and shelter. They commonly hide in tight spaces around kitchens, bathrooms, appliances, cabinets, plumbing, and stored materials.

That requires a different response from an outdoor American, smokybrown, or Oriental cockroach that occasionally enters through a door, crawlspace, drain, or utility opening.

For suspected German-cockroach activity, a good inspection looks beyond the one you saw:

• Where are the insects hiding?
• Are small roaches or egg cases present?
• What food, grease, or moisture is accessible?
• Are appliances, cabinets, or plumbing routes involved?
• Could activity be moving between connected rooms or units?
• What monitoring and follow-up are needed?

This is not about shaming anyone. German cockroaches can arrive in boxes, bags, appliances, furniture, deliveries, or other belongings. Once established, spraying whatever runs across the counter rarely addresses the entire problem.

Identification first. Then sanitation, monitoring, treatment, and follow-up matched to what the inspection finds.
