The Audi came in sitting wrong.

The air suspension wasn't holding. The lines kept blowing off, so Matt squared the ends up and reinstalled them so they wouldn't come loose again. Then he went to programming to see if the car would come back up on its own. It didn't.

The failure was further in than that. A residual pressure valve in one of the bags.

These cars make you work for it, and that's part of what Matt loves about them.

Brake noise doesn't all mean the same thing.

A squeal on the first few stops after a car has been sitting is usually moisture or light surface rust on the rotors. It scrubs off as you drive. Nothing to chase.

The one worth paying attention to is the squeal that doesn't quit — every stop, warm or cold. That can be the wear indicator tab doing exactly what it was built to do. It can also be glazed pads, or hardware that's gone dry. From the driver's seat they sound the same.

Grinding is its own thing. Friction material gone, metal riding on metal.

The sound narrows it down. An inspection is what tells you which one it actually is.

Some of you have already met Morgan. For everybody who hasn't — she's Matt and Alysia's oldest daughter, and she's been part of the crew since earlier this year. Family-owned around here isn't just a line on the sign.

Morgan handles parts once they hit the door. She checks in what comes off the delivery, matches it to the right job, and keeps the parts room straight so the techs aren't digging around for something. If you're without a vehicle for the day, she's usually the one giving you a ride.

A car can be diagnosed, quoted, and ready to go and still sit there waiting on a part. That side of it is hers, and it has more to do with how fast you get your vehicle back than most people would guess.

This one's back for the second year in a row.

Last year it was a carburetor rebuild and a full AC system. This time, an oil change and a top-up on the air conditioning.

Good to have it back, and good that it didn't need much.

This Ta**us has been through the shop twice now. The first trip was a transmission replacement, which is about as involved as a repair gets.

The second trip had nothing to do with the first. Broken tie rod in the rear — different system, different fix. A car coming back through the door doesn't always mean something went wrong the first time. Parts wear out on their own schedule, and they don't line up neatly.

The transmission got taken care of. The tie rod is next.

A Porsche Boxster S came in with the check engine light on.

A check engine light can mean a lot of different things, so the first job is narrowing it down before anything gets touched. A scan pointed to the mass air flow sensor, and testing confirmed it had failed. That sensor plays a role in how the engine reads incoming air, so a bad one can throw things off even when the car still feels mostly normal to drive.

A few other maintenance items came up during the same visit. Those got walked through with the owner, and he gave the go-ahead to take care of them too, so the car left in better shape all around instead of just having the one light turned off.
