From Tricks to Treats: The Surprising History of Halloween Traditions

From candy-filled buckets to spine-chilling haunted houses, Halloween is packed with traditions we know and love. But have you ever wondered how they began? Here's a look at the surprising origins of three Halloween favorites.

Trick-or-treating has roots in centuries-old European customs, including "souling," when people exchanged prayers for the dead for food, and "guising," when costumed children performed songs or jokes in exchange for treats.
The American tradition began spreading in the 1920s and 1930s, partly as a way to discourage Halloween pranks and vandalism. It exploded in popularity after World War II, when sugar rationing ended and suburban neighborhoods made collecting candy door-to-door easier than ever.

Love it or hate it, candy corn has been around since the 1880s. A candymaker named George Renninger is often credited with inventing the colorful confection, which was later popularized by the Goelitz Confectionery Company in 1898. Originally marketed as "Chicken Feed," complete with a rooster on the packaging, candy corn was associated with the fall harvest long before becoming a Halloween staple.

Haunted attractions have surprisingly humble beginnings. During the 1930s, American families began transforming their basements and homes into spooky experiences to entertain children and discourage Halloween mischief. The scares got bigger in 1969 when Disneyland opened its famous Haunted Mansion, introducing elaborate illusions and special effects. During the 1970s, attractions like Knott's Scary Farm helped transform haunted houses into a booming Halloween entertainment tradition.
