What should you look for when buying a home pressure washer unit?
Not the one with the most PSI. That's a guy thing. Always invest in the machine with the most gpm (gallons per minute), as it's about moving the most water possible, not the highest pressure. High pressure does not clean, it causes damage. On commercial units, other than cleaning concrete, we don't use high pressure; we can place our hand safely in front of a nozzle without causing injury. If you're afraid of doing this without ripping your hand open, then you're using too much pressure.
If it's in your budget, buy a machine with 4gpm. This matches the outflow of most home water spigots.
Pro Tip:
1. Never leave your machine running more than a minute without releasing the trigger pressure. This is a safety issue and can cause injury should the hose burst. It can also blow out your O-rings in valves and the water recirculating through the pump will heat up and burn the pump up.
2. Never run a pressure washer without wearing safety glasses.
3. Never pull the trigger while pointed at a window, vinyl siding, or a person. When pulling the trigger point the gun straight up or at the ground as a good habit.
4. When washing a house, wash from bottom up and rinse from top down.
