Yesterday we had a great time at JJC’s Skilled Trades Fair, connecting with JJC and Joliet-area students about careers in the septic and wastewater industry.

Your septic system is built for three things: water, human waste, and toilet paper. Anything else can clog your lines, fill your tank faster, or kill the bacteria that keep your system working.

Keep these out of your toilets and drains:
• “Flushable” wipes, which don’t break down like toilet paper
• Grease and cooking oil
• Paper towels and facial tissues
• Feminine products
• Cat litter
• Harsh chemicals, drain cleaners, paint, and medications

Septic trouble rarely shows up out of nowhere. If you’re seeing any of these, it’s time to call:

• It’s been 2–3 years since your last pump
• Drains are slow to empty
• Gurgling sounds from drains or toilets
• Sewage smells inside or around the yard
• Wet, soggy spots over the drain field
• One patch of grass is suddenly greener than the rest
• Water backing up into floor drains, tubs, or lower toilets

Staying on a regular pumping schedule is the easiest way to protect your drain field and avoid a much bigger repair.
