Fruit flies breed where there is food and water turning into slime. Biofilm. The darker the area, the better. What you see in these jars kind of gives you an idea. It could be a floor drain full of food debris, the molding peeling back on a baseboard in a dish pit, or grout missing from between floor tiles. Anywhere food and water collect and turn into slime, these things can and will breed once they find it. A single female fruit fly can live for up to 50 days, and she can lay up to 10,000 eggs. The adults will feed on sugars, alcohols, fermented foods. They lay their eggs in the slime and the maggots eat that before pupating into adults. If you are having trouble, and you need to get a handle on it, let us know. We would love to help.
