I am very sad to see the home in Basye that just recently burned in a fire. I have been informed that everyone was safe, thank God. Please be vigilant in getting your fireplaces/woodstoves inspected, cleaned and being on top of repairs. It’s so important to keep your chimney functioning safely.
Here are some tips:
- burn hard, DRY wood
- stay away from pine and other soft woods
- use a moisture meter on the wood to check the levels
- CLEAN/INSPECT your chimneys every year
- if you have a rental property or air b&b you should absolutely have it checked twice a year because you are not monitoring the use of the chimney for yourself, but it’s in the hands of the renters.
- if you are renting your property it would also be smart to provide the wood for the renters.

I am so happy to help everyone that I can, but more importantly- I wish for safety. So, if you don’t use me that’s ok, but use a professional.
