🍂 Rainy Fall? Here’s How to Protect Your Lawn Before Winter Hits! 🌧️

Heavy fall rains can leave your lawn waterlogged — and that’s a recipe for compacted soil, nutrient loss, and weak roots going into winter. Here’s how to give your grass the protection it deserves:

✅ Stay off the lawn while it’s soaked — footprints and mower wheels can compact the soil.
🍁 Keep leaves cleared so your grass can breathe.
🌱 Aerate (if it’s not too soggy) to improve drainage and root growth.
🧤 Topdress with compost to restore nutrients washed away by the rain.
💧 Check for drainage issues — fix puddles now before they freeze over.
🌾 Finish with a winterizer fertilizer to build strong roots for spring!

As temperatures cool and leaves begin to fall, it’s the perfect time to give your lawn the care it needs to recover from summer stress and prepare for winter. Here are a few key steps we recommend for SE Michigan lawns:

✅ Keep Mowing—But Lower the Deck Slightly
Gradually lower your mowing height to about 2.5–3 inches heading into the final mow. This helps prevent snow mold and matting during winter while still protecting the crown of the grass.

✅ Rake Out Thatch and Dead Grass
Removing matted leaves and thatch allows for better air circulation and gives your lawn a cleaner start come spring. It also helps reduce the risk of mold and disease.

✅ Overseed Thin or Damaged Areas
Fall is the best time for seeding. Cooler temps and increased moisture promote strong root establishment before winter. Use a high-quality sun/shade mix and lightly topdress if needed for better seed-to-soil contact.

✅ Feed the Lawn
A fall fertilizer with a strong potassium number will help strengthen roots and improve winter hardiness. Our slow-release granular blend is tailored to Southeast Michigan soil and seasonal needs.

✅ Watch for Late-Season Weeds
Weeds like clover and wild violet are still active. We’re still treating—if you notice patches lingering, let us know!
