For a typical pool sand filter, the sand should be changed about every 3–5 years.
That said, it’s not just about time—there are signs that tell you the sand isn’t doing its job anymore:
* Water stays cloudy even after running the filter
* You’re needing to backwash more often than usual
* Pressure doesn’t drop much after backwashing
* You see sand blowing back into the pool
* Chemicals seem less effective than they used to
Over time, the sand grains get worn smooth and can’t trap debris as well, and oils/debris can clog it.
