The National Pest Management Association (NPMA) has released its forecast for the fall and winter months. According to the NPMA’s bi-annual Bug Barometer forecast, milder-than-normal temperatures could extend pest activity well into the fall and even winter months across much of the United States.

The forecast, developed by NPMA’s team of board-certified entomologists, analyzes long-term weather predictions and pest biology to provide region-specific insights for the coming months.

Southeast (North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Florida)
A colder, drier winter could prompt rodents to seek shelter indoors earlier. These same conditions may also bring mosquito activity down, providing welcome relief to residents.

With pest activity extending beyond typical seasonal patterns, NPMA emphasizes the importance of working with a qualified pest control professional who can provide targeted solutions for each region’s specific challenges.

I bought a record of wasp sounds thinking that the buzzing sounds would lull me to sleep; however, when I played it, I thought, That doesn’t sound like wasps buzzing...Then I realized I was playing the B side.

From the Pest Control Technology Magazine:

High-Profile Hantavirus Death Underscores Importance of Rodent Control

The death of Betsy Arakawa, wife of Oscar-winning actor Gene Hackman, has put rodent-borne hantavirus pulmonary syndrome in the spotlight. Kathy Heinsohn, technical and training entomologist at American Pest, Fulton, Md., reminded that PMPs in the desert Southwest should be particularly aware of hantavirus, which is primarily linked to the deer mouse in the U.S.

Bugs are like a sneeze
Usually, a sneeze goes without incident. It's a natural reaction. No one freaks out about it. You grab a tissue, wipe your nose, discard the tissue and go on with your life. That is precisely how one should think of the occasional bug in your house. Is there a moth hovering around your porch lite? Achoo! Is there a spider up in the corner? Achoo! Did a roach just run past you in the kitchen? Achoo! You wouldn't take some medicine for the occasional sneeze, would you? Spraying for these bugs would be the same overreaction. Just like you would place your finger under your nose to stifle a sneeze, the proper use of door sweeps, screens, caulking and other home remedies can stifle bugs from dropping by.

From the May 24 issue of The Week. (That's my way of saying, don't blame me for this, I'm not the author). You might have heard that about a trillion cicadas are supposed to be emerging this Spring. It's one of the few times when the 13 year cycle and the 17 year cycle coincide. Cicadas are not dangerous, but they're loud and annoying. If they bother you too much, here's something you can do: Eat them! Yes, they're very closely related to lobsters and shrimp, and you know how much you love lobsters and shrimp. You can use cicadas in any recipe that calls for shrimp. Garlic shrimp, shrimp scampi, fried shrimp...No wait, that should read, Garlic cicada, cicada scampi, fried cicada. Scatter them over a salad for a bit of a crunch. No go on any of those ideas? OK, chocolate cover them for a great dessert, or bake them into cookies.

Watch out for the p*e! This year, we'll see a double emergence of cicadas, when the 13-year babies and the 17-year babies emerge at the same time. Cicadas p*e at a sp*ed of 3 meters per second. That's faster than any other animal, including humans, and horses (and if you've ever seen a horse p*e, you know what I'm talking about...). I wouldn't hang around under any trees this Spring.

This first picture is from the David Attenborough page. I love turtles, and so enjoyed seeing these varieties of shell designs. The second picture is of our turtle, which is also a beautiful one.
