On Monday, President Trump signed two proclamations cutting nearly 3 million acres of protection from Bears Ears and Grand Staircase-Escalante.
These monuments hold more than 100,000 ancestral sites and represent a Tribal co-stewardship framework built over years, one that these proclamations bypass entirely.
They're also economic engines. Since designation, communities around Grand Staircase-Escalante saw a 51% jump in jobs, and San Juan County has seen real income gains since Bears Ears was protected in 2016.
91% of voters across the West want these monuments to stay protected, including a majority of Utah voters. This is common ground, not a divide.
Last Friday, our Seattle team took the day off to enjoy the public lands right in our backyard. Days like that are exactly why we can't stay quiet when those same protections are under threat elsewhere.
