As fall settles in New England, car and truck owners should consider a few important maintenance tasks to prepare for changing weather conditions:
1. **Tire Check**: Inspect tire tread depth and pressure. Consider switching to winter tires if temperatures are consistently below 45°F. Ensure tires are properly inflated, as cold air can cause tire pressure to drop.
2. **Battery Inspection**: Cold weather can be tough on batteries. Check for corrosion on battery terminals and ensure the battery is holding a charge. If it’s more than three years old, consider getting it tested.
3. **Fluid Levels**: Check and top off essential fluids, including antifreeze, oil, brake fluid, and windshield washer fluid. Ensure the antifreeze is mixed correctly to prevent freezing.
4. **Wipers and Lights**: Inspect windshield wipers for wear and replace them if necessary. Ensure all lights (headlights, brake lights, turn signals) are functioning properly for shorter days and potentially poor visibility.
5. **Brakes**: Have your brake system inspected, especially if you’ve noticed any changes in performance. Fall is a good time to ensure your brakes are in top condition for winter driving.
6. **Exhaust System**: Check for leaks or damage, as these can become more pronounced in colder months.
7. **Emergency Kit**: Update your emergency kit to include items for colder weather, such as blankets, gloves, a flashlight, and non-perishable snacks.
8. **Windshield Treatment**: Apply a water-repellent treatment to your windshield to improve visibility during rain and snow.
9. **Cleaning**: Wash and wax your vehicle to protect the paint from road salt and grime. Clean the undercarriage to prevent rust.
10. **Storage Preparation**: If you plan to store your vehicle for the winter, ensure it’s cleaned, serviced, and parked in a dry, protected area.
Taking these steps can help ensure that your vehicle is ready for the challenges of fall and winter driving in New England.
