Flooding and Your Drinking Water: What You Need to Know
Flooding can be overwhelming, and keeping your family safe is a top priority. If you use a private well, it’s important to know that floodwaters can affect the safety of your drinking water.
After flooding, well water may not be safe to use. Floodwater can carry germs, chemicals, sewage, and other contaminants that can enter your well—especially if water is standing around the well cap or casing. These contaminants can cause serious illness, even if the water looks clear.
If you notice any changes in your water’s taste, smell, or appearance, take precautions right away.
DO NOT:
• 🚫 Drink the water or give to animals
• 🚫 Use the water to cook, brush teeth or bathe
• 🚫 Let children or pets play in standing floodwater
DO:
• ✅ Boil your water to a rolling boil for at least 1 minute and let it cool (can be used for cooking, drinking and bathing)
• ✅ Wash your hands with clean, unaffected water and soap
• ✅ Clean and disinfect toys, tools, and other items that came into contact with floodwater

Your health and safety matter. Taking these steps can help prevent illness and ensure your water is safe before returning to normal use.
