Good News Tip for Homeowners, Extreme Cold Week Ahead
With negative wind chills moving in, crawl spaces are one of the most common places we see frozen and burst pipes. If your crawl space vents are open to outside air, now is the time to protect them.
Here are a few quick steps you can take today,
• Close crawl space vents during extreme cold to block freezing air
• Insulate exposed water lines with foam pipe insulation
• Wrap vulnerable pipes with heat tape, especially near exterior walls
• Add insulation to crawl space walls, not just between floor joists
• Make sure any crawl space access doors are sealed tight
• Let indoor faucets drip slightly if pipes run through a crawl space
• Keep indoor heat consistent, even overnight
Frozen pipes often break when they thaw, causing major water damage that could have been prevented.
