Discovering a rat nest inside a new client's attic can be quite fascinating! These clever critters have a talent for finding unique and unexpected nesting spots.
To effectively address nesting inside a home or attic, it's crucial to implement the right control measures. Sealing up, or exclusion, of the exterior envelope of the home. Trapping and removal of any unwanted critters that may now be incidentally trapped inside by the exclusion. Clean up, treat and sanitize the space; after all, they carry terrible diseases like Rat Bite Fever, Angiostrongylus, Seoul virus, and about 30 more listed on the CDC's website. https://www.cdc.gov/healthypets/pets/wildlife/rodent-control.html Once you are certain all the entry points are closed up, regular monitoring of bait stations is key, as it allows you to stay on top of rodent activity and make necessary adjustments to your control strategies. It may be necessary to experiment with different bait formulations, enticing the rats away from nesting and redirecting their focus to the intended purpose of the bait station.
Now, prepare to be amazed by a fun fact! Rats have some really unique physical traits that make them highly adaptable (more to come in later posts). This picture was taken prior to the purchase of a new home in our service area during a routine home inspection.
While the presence of the rat carcass brings a quirky element to the scenario, it's essential to identify the issue before the issue becomes exaggerated. By taking proactive measures, you can create a pest-free environment and maintain it for the entire time you own the home.
