MYTH: If you see a palmetto bug, your house must be dirty.

FACT: The big “palmetto bugs” most Floridians see are usually American cockroaches, and lots of them live outdoors in mulch, palm trees, leaf litter and drains. They wander inside through gaps under doors, through plumbing openings and around garage doors. A spotless Lakewood Ranch kitchen can still get a visitor.

Seeing them often, or seeing small roaches in the kitchen, is a different story. That’s worth having checked out.

Did you know? Fire ant colonies can have more than one queen, and a big mound can hold thousands of ants (sometimes far more).

After all the rain this summer, a lot of Sarasota, Bradenton and Parrish lawns are covered in fresh mounds. Fire ants grab on and sting over and over, so keep kids and pets away from them. Don’t kick or poke a mound, because that just sends them swarming.

If someone has trouble breathing, swelling of the face or throat, or feels dizzy after a sting, call 911 right away.

Welcome back, snowbirds! Before you unpack, do a quick walk-through of the house.

A home that sat closed up all summer is a quiet, undisturbed spot, and pests take advantage of that. Look under sinks, in the back of pantry shelves, in the garage corners and around the lanai for droppings, shed wings, ant trails or roaches.

If you spot anything, deal with it early, before the holiday guests show up. We’re glad to come out to Venice, Longboat Key and everywhere in between and take a look.

Hear scratching in the ceiling around 2 a.m.? That’s probably not the house settling.

When our nights start to cool off, roof rats in Sarasota look for a warm, dry place to nest, and attics are a favorite. They’re great climbers. They use palm trees, overhanging branches and power lines to get onto the roof, then squeeze through gaps around soffits, vents and rooflines.

Things to watch for: droppings in the attic or garage, greasy rub marks along entry points, and chewed wires or insulation.

Tip: German roaches
Tiny brown roaches in the kitchen or bathroom are almost always German cockroaches, and they don't go away on their own. They breed fast and hide in cracks near warmth and water: behind fridges, under sinks, in cabinet hinges.
Store-bought sprays often scatter them deeper into walls. Call (941) 254-1051 for a treatment that actually ends the problem.

Tip: Why palmetto bugs come inside
Palmetto bugs (American cockroaches) usually live outdoors in mulch, palm trees, and drains. When they show up inside, it's usually because they found water and an easy way in: a leaky fixture, a damp garage, a sweating AC line, or an open drain.
