As one of the North Americas top 5 mammals I had to paint him. But there is a bigger story behind this painting...
Growing up i suffered from hereditary depression. Like millions, life wasn't easy. As depression and anxiety kept me down, I continues through adversity by Showing Up. I was on a laundry list of antidepressants that really didn't work. I was surviving but not thriving. I even tried Ketamine but for me, that wasn't a fix. Until.....
I painted this bison during my time as artist-in-residence at Ghost Ranch in Abiuqui NM in 2021. It represents how big struggles can be, like surviving the frozen winter months or perseverance to make it to spring. Yet it is bold and colorful. Moving ever forwards regardless the pace. Slow and steady wins the race. He was Me, and I am him. Together we continue to look for a better life, better pastures. As long as I continued to Show Up.
In painting him, he had to tell the story. It couldn't just be a painting. It had to be more. He needed a close-up to represent his size & he had to be moving forward. Take a closer look at this painting, see him walking? It's subtle but oh so important. He is coming out of the darkness that was life.
Like I said. I wanted a better life, I wanted more. I discovered a little know therapy called Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation or TMS. I was fortunate and thankful a doctor in Santa Fe NM had dedicated the last 15 years of his life treating people with Depression Anxiety and Bi-polar disorders with TMS. For me it was a miracle! In the 3rd of 25 sessions I finally knew what happiness was. I was overjoyed, elated, and had a tremendous amount of energy. This was the FIRST time I had experienced something so transformative. And it lasted. Yes, I was able to do down on my meds but the joy I felt was amazing. It was wonderful to finally be happy.
This is a Limited Edition Giclee of only 100! The Giclee (this is a very high resolution specialty image printed on canvas stretched over a wooden framework and comes ready to hang) is 24" x 36" with my signature on it. It comes with a Letter of Authenticity and Numbered edition and my gratitude.
