Understanding the waterproof blanket and how to keep it waterproof. What makes the blanket waterproof is the fabric is backed with a rubber coating. To keep from ruining the rubber, do not leave the blanket hanging out in the sun when not on the horse. The sun also damages and causes rotting of the nylon straps and binding. When storing the blanket, do not store it in an area that has consistent high temperatures. For cleaning, use only cold water, no harsh detergents and always hang dry. Avoid using a top load washer with an agitator.
With just a little extra thought, your blanket can last quite a few seasons, but there is always the horse that likes to “redesign” their clothing. Luckily, most destruction can be repaired.
