If you have a wood-burning fireplace or stove and plan on enjoying a warm cozy fire this winter, it is essential to have it inspected by a professional to ensure the safety of your home and loved ones.
Local resident Tim Ellithorpe and owner of Tim's Chimney Service in Saginaw, says, "a professional chimney sweep should be performed each year to remove soot, blockages and built-up of creosote from your chimney liner, firebox, smoke chamber, and damper. It only takes a small build-up of creosote glazing to create a chimney fire. Creosote is a highly flammable substance that builds up inside your Chimney or liner when burning wood".
It is important to note that the types of wood you burn will create different amounts of creosote. Pine is the biggest culprit causing a faster build-up and should be avoided as a regular source of wood. Also, avoid green or unseasoned wood that has not been dried for at least six months to one year. The best wood to burn is seasoned hardwoods, such as oak, maple, and birch, because they release more heat and produce fewer creosote deposits.
Established in 1986, Tim's Chimney Service is Saginaw, Bay, and Midland County's only fully Licensed Chimney and venting specialist and State of Michigan mechanical contractor providing preventive maintenance services to prevent chimney fires, water damage and intrusion of damaging elements to residential chimneys.
