Video Inspection with Peter

A roof inspection shouldn't stop at the roof.

In this attic, Peter found a vent pipe that had been left disconnected when the roof was installed. There was also another pipe with nothing connected to it at all.

Neither issue would have been visible from the ground.

That's one of the reasons our free estimates include a full video roof inspection. Sometimes the most important things we find aren't on top of the roof—they're underneath it.

This roof was only a few years old.

Our free estimates include a full video roof inspection so homeowners can see exactly what we see up there. And it’s one of the reasons SkyRight offers a lifetime workmanship warranty — if something was installed incorrectly, we’ll fix it.

After a storm, most people look for missing shingles. But some of the biggest roofing problems have nothing to do with the storm—and can't be seen from the ground.

This roof looked fine from the driveway. Only a few years old. But the installation problems stood out immediately.

Peter found failing shingles, improper flashing, mixed materials, and workmanship issues that most homeowners would never see from below.

A roof can look fine from the driveway and still have serious installation or product problems hiding up close.

Video Inspection
Part 1 of 3.

This roof looked great from the ground.

A couple years old. “New roof.” No obvious leaks.

But once Peter got up there, the problems started showing up fast — failing shingles, improper flashing, mixed materials, uneven courses, and areas where damaged shingles had literally been glued back together instead of replaced.

That’s one of the hardest parts of roofing sometimes. Telling a homeowner the roof they thought was going to last another 20–30 years already has major issues.

That’s why inspections matter. Our free estimates include a full video roof inspection so homeowners can see exactly what we see up there. And it’s one of the reasons SkyRight offers a lifetime workmanship warranty — if something was installed incorrectly, we’ll fix it.

One of the cooler projects we’ve had the chance to work on.

Jorn’s giving a walkthrough of one of the two treehouses we roofed out at Round Lake State Park. One of the treehouses is even ADA accessible and pet friendly.

Definitely not a typical job site for the crew.

Big thanks to Round Lake State Park, Idaho Department of Parks and Recreation, and Nelson Treehouse and Supply for letting us be part of the project.

There’s just something about working on roofs up here in North Idaho.

Different projects. Different weather. Different challenges on every project.

A lot of what we do comes down to paying attention to how a roof actually handles snow, rain, drainage, ventilation, and the conditions this area throws at it year after year.

A few recent projects from around the region.

Part 2 — another sign your roof may be nearing replacement.

Last week Peter showed how exposed fiberglass and lifted seals start showing up as shingles wear out. This week he’s up in Bonners Ferry looking at another roof with heavy granule loss and that shiny fiberglass sheen starting to come through across the surface.

Once those protective granules wear away, the shingles are a lot more exposed to weather and aging speeds up pretty quickly from there.

A lot of roofs don’t fail all at once. Usually there are signs long before that happens.

Yesterday, SkyRight surprised Mary Hutter with this year’s roof giveaway in honor of her late husband, former Sandpoint police officer and Ponderay Police Chief Mike Hutter.

For years, Mike and friends had been patching and tarping the roof however they could. When the roof giveaway opened this spring, Mary was nominated by people in the community who knew the story and wanted to help finally get it done.

What made yesterday especially meaningful was that it also would have been Mike’s 64th birthday.

A lot of people showed up for this one — friends, family, local law enforcement, and a crew ready to get the roof done.

Big thank you to CertainTeed for helping support this year’s giveaway.

If you’re a local contractor or business and would like to partner with us on next year’s roof giveaway, shoot us a message. We’d love to collaborate.

Roof installation is scheduled for later this summer.

Part 1 — one of the clearest signs your roof is wearing out.

Peter’s down in Post Falls showing one of the easiest ways to spot a roof nearing the end of its life: exposed fiberglass, granule loss, and shingles starting to lift instead of sealing down the way they should.

Most people don’t notice it until there’s already a leak. Better to catch it early enough to plan ahead.

Part 2 coming next week.
