Mediterranean oak borer (MOB)

The MOB, an invasive, tree-killing beetle, was confirmed in Novato by the University of California in spring 2025. This ambrosia beetle is believed to have been introduced to California through infested w**e barrel wood in Napa County and poses a significant threat to native oak trees, particularly mature valley oak (Quercus lobata) and blue oak (Quercus douglasii). MOB attacks can rapidly kill otherwise healthy, mature valley and blue oaks.

Identifying hazardous tree conditions

When there is a hanging branch or crack in a tree, it’s easy to see that a problem exists. Other issues may be more difficult to detect.
Simple solutions can make a big difference. Pruning can lessen branch weight and wind resistance. Cables and brace rods can also be effective in helping to limit branch movement and protect trees.

Another happy customer!

In early September 2026, arborist Juan Ochoa, was doing a shrub and tree inspection at a property of one of his clients in Mill Valley. At the end of the meeting, our client noticed a Spotted Owl perched at a Coast Live Oak branch, very close to where we were (less than 5 feet away). Over many years, our client has invested time and money to maintain her trees in good safety and health conditions. Caring for trees can promote good habitat for wildlife and many other organisms.

Pit scale and twig blight on coast live oak

A coast live oak (Quercus agrifolia) in Kentfield was recently inspected after the homeowner noticed significant dead leaves in the lower canopy. Arborist Adam Clarke identified pit scale (Asterodiaspis) and twig blight (Cryptocline), which were confirmed by the Bartlett Tree Research Laboratory. These two issues commonly occur together on Coast live oak, and we are seeing an increasing number of cases throughout Kentfield and San Rafael. Both can be effectively managed with proper treatment.
