The number one design mistake in Bay Area homes?

The rug is too small.

It happens in every room — living rooms where the furniture floats with no anchor, dining rooms where chairs fall off the edge at every dinner party, bedrooms where your feet hit cold hardwood floor every single morning.

Here are the rules every designer lives by:

Living room — front legs on at minimum. All legs on if the space allows. Always go bigger than you think.

Dining room — your rug should extend at least 24 inches beyond the table on all sides so chairs stay on the rug even when pulled out.

Bedroom — extend at least 18 to 24 inches beyond the bed on all three sides. Your feet should land on something beautiful every morning.

And if you already have a rug that’s too big for your new space — don’t replace it. At Simonian Rugs our craftswomen resize and rebind rugs by hand to fit your space exactly.
