First Post of the Year???

It's been a long time since we've posted anything new on our website. The group is still spread out and not so active as a group, but there's a possibility that some of us may try to reform some kind of activity in one of the facilities of the Maritime National Park in SF, so stay tuned for more info....

This 1/64-scale model of the English Royal Navy Cutter HMS Sherbourne is being built by HSPMS member Clare Hess from the Amati kit of the cutter Lady Nelson. The photos of this nice looking model were posted on the Ages of Sail page earlier today.

Recently, three members of the old Hyde Street Pier Model Shipwrights group, Paul Reck, Tom Shea, and Clare Hess, met up for lunch at the Buena Vista Cafe just up the block from the Hyde Street Pier. It wasn't a club-related gathering, just a social one. But, one thing that was brought up was the idea of having a ship model meeting again....

While it's a little late for Christmas, the post from Ages of Sail about these Amati kits of classic America's Cup racers makes a lot of sense. Easy curves to plank, or just go with a plastic hull, very light amount of rigging, nice amount of deck detailing, and you've got a ship model that you can be proud to display. These kits should be a relatively quick build. And the ones with the plastic hulls in particular should be great for young modelers too.

Being a ship modeler, we often spend lots of time on our wood projects, but occasionally, building a plastic model can be a relatively quick and fun way to build something different. HSPMS member Paul Reck shared photos of his most recently completed project, a small plastic model of the whale ship Charles W. Morgan. Paul bought the kit on Ebay....

My Charles royal yacht built from a 1/64-scale wooden kit from 株式会社ウッディ ジョー Woody JOE, and originally purchased from Japan Online Hobby Store. Zootoyz.jp.

I've made very few modifications from the original kit, really. I did use my own supply of Castello Boxwood for the deck and made my own sails. Plus, there are a few changes here and there, but they're actually pretty minor.

Getting close to completion now. Hoping to finish this week, but we'll just have to see how many distractions get in the way. Any, it will be completed soon.
