Here are a few ways to keep that green monster "ALGAE"' from showing up in your pool.

1. SANITATION - keep your sanitizer level UP. Make sure your pool has a good level of chlorine all day every day. Keeping a few tablets in a floater or having a salt system are a great help with this.

2. FILTRATION - Keep that water moving! Algae starts when water stops. Here in Southern California you want your pool running 6-8 hours every day. The larger the pool is the more it needs to run.

3. FILTRATION - (Yep..said it again!) - keep an eye on your filter pressure. A dirty filter leads to algae growth. Pool filter needs to be cleaned every 3 months or a 8-10lb increase of filter pressure...whichever comes first!

4. PREVENTIVE Algaecide - while this is not for everyone...it can help the trouble pool or the pool that has older, harder to manage water in it. There are a wide variety of preventive algaecides available. Check with us to see which would work best for your pool.

5. TEST your pool water - staying on top of your chemical balance is extremely important. The conditioner, chlorine, pH and alkalinity levels all play a part in keeping your pool crystal clear. If you have troubles testing your pool on your own or have questions, we are here to help.

Despite their beauty, "fall leaves are one of the biggest physical and visual obstacles to homeowners taking advantage of their pools in the fall for extended swimming and poolside entertaining. Here are a few tips to help maintain your pool looking pristine.

In the fall, homeowners should perform several pool-maintenance routines more frequently to counteract leaves: emptying skimmer and pump baskets, checking the filter to ensure it doesn't get clogged, keeping sanitizer levels up and backwashing.

When leaves do collect in pools, homeowners can direct leaves more effectively to the skimmer by pointing their pools' wall jets in the same direction to move water around the perimeter. If leaves have settled at the bottom of a homeowner's pool, they should be removed as soon as possible or they may stain the pool, especially concrete.
