San Diego’s rain is a good reminder of what ceramic coating is really for.

After months of dry weather, rain can wash dust and grime off the roads. Add in road spray while you’re driving, and your paint can end up covered in dirty water and residue.

Watch this rinse test: one half of the panel is unprotected and sits flat, while the ceramic-coated side releases water much more readily. That slick surface gives dirt and grime less to grab onto, so they’re easier to rinse away. It doesn’t make your car contamination-proof, but it can make ongoing care easier.

When the rain clears, wash off the road film when you can, and try not to let dirty water dry in the sun. That’s where residue and water spots can become a bigger headache.

Self Healing PPF doesn’t mean Self Repairing PPF…
People hear “self-healing PPF” and sometimes think the film repairs everything.

It doesn’t.

Self-healing Paint Protection Film is designed to recover from light surface scratches and swirl marks in the film itself, usually with heat.

That can come from warm water, the sun, or controlled heat during maintenance.

What it will not do is magically repair deep cuts, punctures, or major impacts.

That distinction matters.

PPF is there to absorb abuse that would otherwise be happening directly to your paint.

And when the film takes enough damage, sometimes the right answer is replacing that section instead of trying to save it forever.

If you’re looking into self-healing PPF in San Diego, ask what “self-healing” actually means before assuming the film is indestructible.

Good protection starts with realistic expectations.

Brand-new cars are probably some of the most surprising vehicles we inspect.

People assume new paint should be perfect.

Sometimes it is.

Sometimes it absolutely isn’t.

We see light wash marks.

Water spots.

Dealer-installed swirls.

Transport contamination.

Occasionally even sanding or polishing marks from work that happened before the customer ever took delivery.

That doesn’t mean there’s anything wrong with the car.

It just means “brand new” and “perfect paint” aren’t always the same thing.

That’s why I like inspecting new vehicles before recommending ceramic coating or PPF.

We can see what we’re starting with and decide whether the paint actually needs correction before protecting it.

Starting with good paint is a whole lot easier than fixing it later.
