With all the recent attention around hantavirus, it’s a good reminder that rodent problems aren’t always just about the damage they cause.

What many homeowners don’t realize is that rodents can leave behind droppings, urine, and nesting material that may carry health risks—especially in attics, garages, and crawlspaces where activity often goes unnoticed.

One of the biggest mistakes people make is trying to clean it up too quickly.

Sweeping or vacuuming droppings can actually disturb particles into the air and make the situation worse.

The better approach:

• identify where the activity is coming from
• remove the rodents
• clean and sanitize properly
• seal off how they got in

Pest myth: clean homes don’t get pests.

It’s one of the most common things we hear:

"We keep a really clean house, so I don’t know why we’re seeing ants / roaches / spiders."

The truth is, cleanliness helps—but it’s only one piece of the puzzle.

Most pests are looking for a few basic things:

• Food (even tiny crumbs or residue)
• Water (leaks, moisture, condensation)
• Shelter (warm, protected places to hide)
• Access (small gaps, cracks, and entry points)

And sometimes weather plays a big role too.

Heavy rain, heat, and seasonal changes can push pests out of their normal hiding spots and closer to the home.

That’s why even clean, well-kept homes can still have pest issues.

With all the rain today and better weather coming after, here’s something homeowners should keep an eye on over the next few days:

Heavy rain tends to push both pests and wildlife out of their normal hiding spots and closer to homes.

A few things worth checking:

• Rooflines and soffits for gaps or loose areas
• Attic noises (especially tonight and early morning)
• Ant activity around doors, windows, and foundations
• Standing water near the home (mosquitoes love it)
• Damaged vents or crawlspace openings

A lot of pest and wildlife issues start right after weather like this—not always immediately, but in the days that follow when things dry out.

One thing a lot of homeowners don’t realize: when babies are involved, the mother usually won’t leave easily.

This time of year, many wildlife issues involve nesting and young animals hidden in attics, walls, and crawlspaces.

When that happens, the mother becomes much more protective and persistent—often returning over and over if the issue isn’t handled correctly.

That’s why this time of year can be more complicated than just “getting the animal out.”

Proper removal means accounting for the babies, the mother, and how they got in—otherwise the problem often isn’t over.

This is usually what’s going on when homeowners start hearing something in the attic—especially after all the rain we just had.

When areas get flooded or disturbed, animals look for dry, protected spaces. Rooflines and attics are some of the easiest places for them to get into, especially if there’s already a small gap or weak spot.

Once they find a way in, they tend to keep using the same area—and that’s when a small issue can turn into something bigger pretty quickly.
