Adaptation is not the same as evolution. Share your thoughts.
I believe God created mankind and all living creatures. We are capable of adapting to terrain, weather and circumstances.
Raccoons are not just adapting to cities. They are quietly reshaping themselves to fit them.
But the detail most people miss is how fast that change is happening.
In urban environments, raccoons encounter steady food, fewer predators, and constant human presence. Over generations, those pressures select for individuals that are calmer, less reactive, and more willing to live close to us.
Researchers have already documented physical shifts. Shorter snouts. Smaller teeth. Subtle changes that mirror early domestication patterns seen in animals like dogs and foxes.
Behavior follows the same path. City raccoons take more risks, solve problems faster, and tolerate noise, light, and proximity that would stress their rural counterparts.
Trash bins replace forests. Streetlights replace the moon. And the animals adjust, not slowly over millennia, but within a few decades.
It is not a planned process. No one is training them. The environment is doing the work.
Domestication used to require intention. Now it only requires opportunity.
Evolution has not sped up. We have simply brought it closer.
And it is happening whether we notice it or not.
