TODAY IS TOM GREEN'S BIRTHDAY! Thomas "Tom" Green (June 8, 1814 β April 12, 1864) Tom Green County, Texas was named in his honor in 1874. There is a Tom Green Street in Brenham, TX as well as one in Austin, TX. The U.S. Navy's landing ship, "USS Tom Green County", was named after our county and Green.
In 1863 Tom Green was promoted to Brigadier General in command of the Texas Confederate forces.
Green was fatally wounded at short range by the cannon of a Federal gunboat on the Red River at the Battle of Blair's Landing in Northern Louisiana on April 12, 1864.
He is one of only four Texas Confederate veterans to be awarded the Confederate Medal of Honor by the Sons of Confederate Veterans for his actions that day.
Tom Green was an American soldier and lawyer who took part in the Texas Revolution of 1835β36 serving under Sam Houston. He also served in the Mexican-American War. Green was clerk of the Texas Supreme Court until the outbreak of the Civil War.
