No Ordinary Life
An Autobiography of Helen Mar Carter Monson
by Helen Monson and Kim Poole

A Vivid Memoir of a Unique Childhood

In our modern age of streaming media and scheduled recreation, it’s easy to forget what childhood used to be like—the everyday discoveries and delights, the hilarious catastrophes and small triumphs. No Ordinary Life is a time machine taking us back to Depression-era Salt Lake City, where Helen grew up making wonderful memories: “Spring was here! I coaxed Mama to let me leave my coat home. That way everyone could see my new dress! And that gave me two things to brag about, because most of the children were still cumbered with their winter coats. I was so excited at being center stage, I was talking non-stop as we arrived at school, and opened the doors to the long closet in back to remove our coats. As I sat, I became aware of an unusual silence. Strange. The bell hadn’t rung. I looked around to see what was the matter, and I heard some giggles and whispers, and I saw a girl point at me. I looked at me too. I was sitting there in my petticoat. Instantly I knew what had happened. I had absent-mindedly taken off my button-down-the-front-dress as if it were my coat, and hung it up with everyone else!” Despite poverty and stress, Helen’s stories focus on joy and adventure . . . while providing a poignantly authentic lens on her family and herself. No Ordinary Life is the first book of The Greatest Gamble series, and covers Helen’s life from her earliest memories through junior high.

“The Wonder Of It All” by John Nicholas Udall - only child of Ruth Woolley Kimball (Spencer W. Kimball’s older sister). She has 7 grandchildren, all of whom are still living, mostly in Arizona. Nicholas had a close friendship with Spencer Kimball, which he discusses in the book. All of Ruth’s grandchildren are interested in meeting their second cousins (decedents of Andrew Kimball).

Heber C. Kimball was Mormonism's most colorful leader and a major force in shaping, sustaining, and spreading the Mormon faith. Only Joseph Smith and Brigham Young wielded as much authority or had as much influence during the first four decades of the Mormon church. This is the first comprehensive and objective biography of Kimball since 1888. Stanley B. Kimball, Heber's great-great-grandson, shows us the man in all of his many dimensions---missionary, pioneer, preacher, politician, farmer, father, and husband.

"Superb! This is a superior biography, based almost entirely on manuscript sources, few of which have been used or even examined by other scholars. It is new, it is fresh, it is fast-moving, it has the ring of truth, there is little editorializing, and it is written with economy, clarity, and balance."
-- Leonard J. Arrington, author of Brigham Young: American Moses

Not Always Polished:
The diaries are known for their informal style, with Kimball's spelling and grammar not always conforming to modern standards.

Limited Annotation:
While the editor provides a biographical chronology and some maps, the annotation is relatively sparse, which may require some background knowledge for a full understanding of the context.
