New on the blog: the eight things a real estimate includes (a visit to the house, a load calculation instead of "same size as the old one," exact model numbers, a venting plan, an item-by-item list of what's included, the two warranties named separately, rebates that actually apply to your city, and one written total that doesn't expire when the salesperson leaves) plus the seven red flags. Furnace won't turn on? About a third of the no-heat calls we take in October end with our technician flipping a switch the homeowner didn't know existed. We'd rather you find it yourself. New on the blog: the eight-minute checklist our dispatcher walks people through on the phone, in the order that finds the problem fastest. Thermostat batteries, the switch on the furnace that looks like a light switch, the breaker, the panel door that isn't latched, the filter that trips the limit, the condensate float on a high-efficiency unit, the gas valve, and how to read the blinking light. Pero cada octubre vemos furnaces "mu***os" que solo necesitaban un sensor de flama limpio o un encendedor de repuesto, y una cotización de miles de dólares encima de la mesa. Antes de firmar, mándenos esa cotización. La segunda opinión es gratis, se la damos por escrito y en español, y termina de una de tres maneras: la cotización es justa y se lo decimos; el furnace tiene arreglo y le cotizamos la reparación; o de verdad ya terminó su vida y le cotizamos el cambio como debe ser, con cada cosa incluida, para que compare. Diez minutos antes de prender el suyo: filtro nuevo, rejillas abiertas, nada arrimado al aparato, y pilas nuevas en el detector de monóxido de carbono. Luego párese junto al furnace y escuche. Un olor a polvo quemado los primeros veinte minutos es normal. Olor a quemado eléctrico, un golpe al encender, o gas, no lo es: con gas, salga de la casa primero y llame a Dominion Energy antes que a nadie. New ductwork in a finished Murray home usually means drop boxes: framed soffits that shave inches off every ceiling they cross. This homeowner did not want to lose that headroom, so the furnace went up instead of down. We built a platform in the attic, set the Goodman furnace and air handler on it, and ran the ducts up there with it, every run insulated and every plenum wrapped, because a Utah attic swings from freezing to 130 degrees. Walk the rooms below and there is nothing to notice: no soffits, just ceiling registers. Furnace season is the right time to ask where your equipment should live.
