Garten Services

Garten Services Garten Services is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that provides jobs for over 500 adults with disabilities in Oregon's Willamette Valley each year.

Through close relationships with local area businesses and Garten's own business enterprises, we recruit, train and place skilled workers with disabilities into our community's workforce. We help people with developmental disabilities and long-term mental illness become contributing taxpayers rather than dependents on social service programs. This frees up ever-diminishing social service dollars t

o be used in the support of higher-need individuals. At Garten, we augment community placements with employment opportunities in our own fee-for-services professional enterprises: confidential document shredding, commercial laundry, custodial, electronics refurbishing and recycling, mail services, recycling, hand packaging & assembly, and order fulfillment. We also provide a day activities program for seniors with disabilities who have aged out of the work force, helping them remain physically, socially and intellectually active—and engaged in their community.

As Disability Pride Month comes to an end, we celebrate the Disability Pride Flag as a whole. The flag is a symbol of the ongoing pursuit of equity, accessibility, and belonging.

Disability Pride doesn't end when July does. Here are a few ways you can help make your community more accessible for people of all abilities:
• Learn from and listen to disabled voices and lived experiences.
• Advocate for accessible spaces, events, and workplaces.
• Use respectful language and challenge ableist stereotypes.
• Support businesses and organizations that prioritize inclusion and accessibility.
• Speak up when you see barriers, whether they're physical, digital, or social.
• Not all disabilities are visible, and choose empathy over assumptions.

Let's keep going.

As we conclude our Pride in Every Ability series, gray serves as a solemn reminder of those whose lives have been shaped or lost because of ableist violence and institutional neglect. It honors the victims whose stories have too often gone unheard, while recognizing the importance of accountability and lasting change.

We'd like to take this post specifically to acknowledge the work that remains to ensure every person lives with respect, protected from harm, and given the opportunity live with safety and happiness. Pride means remembering the past while continuing to build a more inclusive future for all.

Welcome to the House of Garten!

This year, we invite you to be our house guest and help us shine a spotlight on independence while raising funds to support people with disabilities as they live fulfilling, meaningful lives.

Presented by Oregon State Credit Union, the 2026 Garten Gala will take over the Salem Convention Center for a night of blues, inspiration, and community. Together, we’ll celebrate the rhythm of opportunity and work to make Salem a more inclusive place for all.

The doors are opening soon. Join us October 3, 2026!

As Pride in Every Ability continues, white represents the millions of people living with invisible disabilities. Many disabilities go visually unnoticed, yet many individuals navigate chronic illnesses, neurological conditions, mental health disabilities, and other unseen challenges each day.

Every person's experience is real, even when it isn't immediately visible. By choosing understanding over assumptions and compassion over judgment, we help create communities where everyone feels respected, supported, and empowered to live authentically.

We arrive at gold for our Pride In Every Ability Series. This color represents people with cognitive and intellectual disabilities, recognizing the unique ways people learn, communicate, solve problems, and experience the world.

Every person brings valuable perspectives, talents, and strengths that deserve celebration. When we create spaces that embrace different ways of thinking, everyone benefits. Recognizing potential beyond assumptions and celebrating every mind for exactly what it is will bring our communities together.

Next on pride in every ability, green takes center stage to pay homage to the sensory disability community. This community spans the Deaf, blind, low-vision, and sensory-processing worlds.

Together, these diverse perspectives actively shape society, and interact with the world through a different lens of sight, sound, and touch. Our communities are forever richer because of the different ways we sense and experience life.

As we continue with our pride in every ability theme, we come to the color blue. We pay tribute to the millions of people living with psychiatric and emotional disabilities.

Every day, individuals quietly pilot unseen journeys that require resilience, empathy, and courage. Every disability deserves recognition. Our minds perceive, feel, and process the world differently, and that diversity makes our communities whole. Every mind is valuable, every story matters, everyone belongs.

As we close out July, we celebrate the power of every ability this Disability Pride Month.

Red represents the strength and adaptabilities of those living with physical disabilities, proving anyone can navigate the world and have a voice in their community. Our bodies and minds hold immense power.

Let’s keep advancing and building a world grounded in true accessibility. Pride means celebrating who we are, without any sort of apology.

Recognizing everyone's disability comes with its own challenges shows respect for anyone's personal story. The language someone uses to describe themselves is part of their story, their identity, and their voice.

We may not always know the perfect words, and language will continue to evolve. What matters most is our willingness to listen, learn, and respect the perspectives of the people we communicate with.

True inclusion means creating a world where people don't have to hide parts of who they are to belong.

If you've ever wondered where a usable computer goes after it's recycled at Garten, this is it.

Our Computer Lab team works hard to test, clean, repair, and prepare devices for reuse. Their work not only helps keep electronics out of landfills, but also makes affordable technology available to people in our community.

Thank you to our incredible Computer Lab team for the care, skill, and dedication you bring every day. You make a difference for both people and the planet.
