When water gets into your home, the clock starts running whether you notice it or not. A lot of folks figure a wet carpet or soaked baseboard can wait for the weekend.

The rough timeline once materials stay wet looks like this:
➡️ First 24 hours: moisture soaks into drywall, padding, and subfloor
➡️ 24 to 48 hours: mold spores wake up and start colonizing
➡️ Past 48 hours: growth spreads and the cleanup gets a lot bigger

That's why our team treats water damage as a same-day thing, not a Monday thing. The faster we dry it out the right way, the less you end up losing.

After a water event, the big question is the same: can the carpet be saved, or does it have to go? It comes down to two things, the water and the time.

Clean it: if the water was clean, like a supply line or a rain leak caught fast, and it has not sat for days, extraction often brings it back.

Replace it: if the water was contaminated, like sewage or storm flooding, or the pad stayed soaked too long, cleaning is not worth the risk.

The catch is that soaked padding can look fine from the top when it is anything but.

Not sure which one is yours? Send a photo and a few details and we will tell you straight.

The most common mold advice we hear is also the most misleading: just spray it with bleach. On a hard, non-porous surface like tile or glass, bleach handles surface mold fine. On drywall, wood, or anything porous, it is a different story.

Mold sends roots into porous material. Bleach kills the color on top while the roots keep growing, which is why that "cleaned" spot comes back weeks later, often bigger.
Bleach is also mostly water, so on porous surfaces you can leave behind the very moisture that feeds it.

When mold keeps returning, the material and the moisture source both need attention. That is what real remediation handles.

It is peak AC season across the St. Louis Metro, which means your air conditioner is pulling gallons of moisture out of the air every day.

When it is working, that water drains away and you never think about it. When the condensate line clogs or the drip pan overflows, that water ends up in your ceiling, closet, or the wall behind the unit.

Warm, damp, and dark is exactly what mold wants, and it can take hold in a couple of days, long before you smell anything.

Quick check this month: make sure the condensate line is clear and the pan drains. If you spot staining or catch a musty smell, we offer free inspections.

After the fire trucks leave, most families have no idea what comes next.

The first day matters most, so here is how our team at ProSteam handles it:
➡️ Secure the property with emergency board-up so weather and animals stay out
➡️ Pull the water and moisture left from firefighting before it becomes a second disaster
➡️ Start removing soot, since it keeps eating at metal and finishes the longer it sits
➡️ Pack out and inventory belongings that can be saved and cleaned off site

We handle all of it in house, so you are not juggling five companies at once.

If your water heater is more than ten years old, it is living on borrowed time.

Tanks rust from the inside out, and when the bottom finally goes, that is forty gallons on your floor with zero warning.

Check the sticker for the install date. If it is pushing a decade, plan the swap now, not after the flood.

Summer storms around St. Charles County have a nasty habit of knocking out the power right when your basement needs the sump pump the most. No power means no pump. And a dead pump during heavy rain is how a finished basement turns into an indoor pool overnight.

If your sump pump runs on house power alone, it has a single point of failure. A battery backup or a water-powered backup keeps it running when the grid goes down, which is exactly when you need it.

Not sure if yours has a backup? We can take a look before the next big one rolls through.
