The end of summer is a great time to tackle the mess and clutter that has been growing in the garage.

Minnesota garages deal with stuff most garage advice doesn't cover. A few things worth planning for now, before the snow shows up:

> Road salt and de-icer residue from last winter may still be sitting on the floor, and left alone it eats into concrete over time. Give the floor a good rinse before it happens all over again.

> Make room for winter gear (snow blowers, shovels, etc.) now so you don’t have to scramble when winter hits.

> Humidity and condensation weakens cardboard boxes over time. We recommend using plastic bins for storage.

> Clean before you organize. A newly organized garage over old oil stains and dust is still a garage that needs work. Sweep, degrease, and address any rust before anything goes back on the shelves.

Get it sorted now and your garage will actually work for you all winter, instead of becoming the place everything gets shoved when it's -10°F outside.

Getting ready for guests can make it feel like you need to clean your entire house from top to bottom. You really don't.

Before guests arrive, focus on the spaces they'll actually use and the things they're most likely to notice: a clean bathroom, tidy living areas, clear kitchen counters, fresh-smelling rooms, and clean floors in the high-traffic areas.

The inside of the oven can wait. 😉

Almost half of the homes we clean have a furry pet in the family. Plus we're pet owners ourselves, so we've got plenty of experience cleaning up after dogs and cats.

Here are a few quick tips to add to your routine that will make a big difference in the long run:

> Vacuum furniture before floors. Loose hair falls as you go, so cleaning the couch first means you're not vacuuming the same floor twice.

> Dust before you vacuum, not after. Otherwise the dander you just knocked loose resettles right back down.

> Check baseboards and air return vents. They collect more pet hair than almost anywhere else in the house.

> Skip air fresheners for pet odors. They just mask the smell instead of removing it. An oxygen-based cleaner actually breaks down what's causing the smell in the first place.

> Wash pet bedding weekly. It's one of the biggest sources of lingering pet odors.

None of these tips require an overhaul, but they'll help your home actually feel cleaner.

Minnesota is Minnesota-ing again. After some very mild weather and even sunny temps in the 50s, mother nature is likely to drop up to a foot of snow on the Twin Cities this weekend.

Seasoned Minnesotans know better than to fall for the early tease of a false spring, but even the most grizzled veterans among us can get weather whiplash.

It’s not just the psychological toll of adjusting to the rapid weather swings. If you’re anything like us, your home is also caught up in the vacillating seasons. We’ve got our roller blades, bikes, and soccer balls out next to our winter jackets, snow pants, and shovels. Our entryway looks like it can’t decide what season it is, because it can’t.

But the reality is that the average last frost date for the Twin Cities is in early May, which means we have another 4-6 weeks of this seasonal no-man’s land. So how are we getting through this homestretch before spring?

Honestly, our best advice is to give yourself some grace. The entryway is going to be crowded for a few more weeks, and that’s just the cost of living somewhere with four real seasons.

Take this weekend as an opportunity to reset your entryway so it’s well organized heading into the week ahead. We’ll also be trying our best to get out and enjoy whatever snowfall we end up with.
