Well folks, it’s true. After more than three decades, I will be retiring from News 12 later this year.
First I want to say how badly I feel that people had to read about it in the newspaper. I had wanted to share that in my own way and in my own time.
Secondly I want to say thank you to all the people who have reached out to me through social media, text messages, emails and voice mails. If I didn’t respond to you, it’s only because I’ve been overwhelmed by it all.
This was of course a bittersweet decision. No one who retires – unless they dislike their job or they won a Mega Millions jackpot (neither of which apply to me) -- makes that decision without some hesitation. But I also want to stress that, despite rumors, this was 100% my decision, made after long talks with my family, close friends and colleagues. This was a voluntary retirement program offered to eligible employees and at the end of the day, I decided it was a good move for me where I am in my life right now.
I also want to congratulate Danielle Campbell and Andrew Ehinger on their decision to do the same. Danielle and I were co-anchors in the morning for more than a decade and it was a delight to work with her. I grew up in Syosset, she grew up in Huntington and we both started our careers in the early 80s in Long Island radio. I cannot tell you how much we’d laugh every single day. And Andrew is just a good guy and very solid reporter. I’m excited for what’s next for both of them.
As for me, I’ll be around until later this year, doing what I and my beloved News 12 have been doing for the past 36-and-a-half years – bringing Long Islanders information that affects their daily lives, whether it’s on their block, in their community, their school district or county. So I’ll see you tonight on The News at Ten and I have plenty of exciting East End Shows in the works for the months ahead.
