One of the most destructive animal pests that we deal with is the mole. Moles are eating machines that are designed to eat hundreds of worms and can dig tunnels at amazing speeds. The most common complaint ass
ociated with mole problems is their tunneling habit. They cause mole damage when they tunnel beneath the earth and build extensive tunnel networks. Mole tunnels that are close to the earth’s surface are typically feeding tunnels, identifiable by the resulting areas of raised ground. Unfortunately, moles have the ability to dig one foot of shallow tunnel per minute. Tunnels that are deeper below the surface (between 6 and 24 inches deep) are typically shelter tunnels where moles will enter during severe weather conditions. Moles in yard will dig deeper tunnels at a rate of 12 to 15 feet per hour. Moles eat earthworms primarily and also insect larvae, and inrable damage to lawns. The damage is usually tunnels or mounds in your lawn that can be unsightly, disturb root systems, and cause grass or other landscaping to die. Moles are about the size of rat (about 6 to 8 inches long) and can weigh 3 to 6 ounces. Every year, a mole can have a litter of two to six young any time from mid-April through May. Most homeowners are confused by conflicting advice on mole control.
