The effects of cold weather on your RV Batteries.

One of the most essential components to your RV's electrical system are your Batteries.

During the winter months, both your House and Chassis Batteries should be kept at a high state of charge and checked on a regular basis. If your plugged into electricity and your system is equipped with an on board charger it will keep your batteries charged up. A well maintained deep cycle or marine battery can provide service beyond 5 years.

While in storage, if your not plugged into electricity, make sure your batteries are brought up to a full charge and then turn your battery disconnect switch to the off or stored position. If your rig is not equipped with a disconnect switch then disconnect the negative terminal.

Over 90% of all RV and Boat Batteries are known as " Wet or Flooded Lead Acid Batteries.

One of the most common mistakes during winter months is storing lead-acid batteries in a discharged state. A discharged battery in extremely cold temperatures will allow the electrolyte to freeze, causing it to expand. Electrolyte expansion can crack the battery case, causing a leak or complete battery failure.

A discharged battery could start freezing at the same temperature as water but "A 100 percent fully charged battery will not freeze until approximately minus 76 degrees Fahrenheit.
