Wild Side of the Bufferlands: It’s the Year of the Vole! 🐭🌾

There’s a population boom happening on the Bufferlands, and these little guys are everywhere!

California voles are small mammals, just a bit larger than a house mouse. Their populations naturally rise and fall, and this is a peak year. During boom years like this, thousands of voles can live on a single acre of grassland.

That’s very good news for the Bufferlands’ hungry predators. Hawks, owls, coyotes, foxes, snakes, and other wildlife rely on voles for food, and an abundant year can help predators successfully raise more young.

It’s all part of the cycle of life on the Bufferlands. A boom for one tiny animal can help an entire ecosystem thrive.

Welcome to the Wild Side of the Bufferlands, where we’ll introduce you to some of the wildlife that calls this special place home. 🌿

Pouring fats, oils, and grease down the sink can lead to clogged pipes and sewer backups. Even when grease starts out as a liquid, it will cool and build up inside your pipes.

Next time you’re cooking:

• Let grease cool and put it in a container for disposal. Check with your service provider for exact instructions on where to dispose of used cooking oil.
• Scrape food scraps into your organics cart.

Meet the SacSewer Warriors! 💪

Made up of employees from across SacSewer’s Operations Department, the Warriors put their skills, teamwork, and problem-solving abilities to the test through the Water Environment Federation (WEF) Operations Challenge.

But for the team, it’s about much more than competition. Training and competing together builds confidence, strengthens technical skills, and creates connections that carry over into the work they do every day.

Hear directly from the SacSewer Warriors about why they joined the team, what they’ve learned, and why they encourage others to get involved, then see the Warriors in action and learn more about Ops Challenge at sacsewer.com/warriors.

SACSEWER BY THE NUMB3RS

💧 553 million gallons—and every gallon has a second act.

In 2025, SacSewer distributed 553 million gallons of recycled water throughout the region. After undergoing extensive treatment at the EchoWater Resource Recovery Facility, recycled water can be safely used to irrigate parks and landscapes, local commercial and school sites, and even cool equipment at a local power plant.

Water recycling helps conserve valuable drinking-water supplies and reduces demand on the region’s groundwater and surface water resources, especially when water supplies are stretched.

It’s another way SacSewer turns what comes into the sewer system into a valuable resource for the community.
