👀 The oldest resident in your neighborhood might not be your neighbor!

There’s a good chance it’s probably the Eastern Box Turtle 🐢❤️

And there’s a chance it’s been living there longer than you’ve owned your home 🏡

Longer than you’ve had your dog 🐕

Maybe even longer than you’ve been alive! 😱

Eastern Box Turtles are North Carolina’s State Reptile 🇺🇸🐢

They are also one of the most common turtles you’ll see crossing roads across our area this time of year 🚗

And while many Eastern Box Turtles can live for 50 years or more ❤️

Some have even been documented living 80-100+ years! 🤯

Think about that for a second…

That turtle crossing the road today may have already survived…

Hurricanes 🌪️
Floods 🌧️
Predators 🦊
Droughts ☀️
Wildfires 🔥
And decades of traffic 🚗

But that’s not even the craziest part 👀

According to NC State Extension, Eastern Box Turtles spend their lives learning their surroundings 🧭

Where to find food 🍓
Where to find water 💧
Where to hide 🌿
Where to spend the winter ❄️

Scientists still don’t fully understand how they do it…

But they have an incredible ability to find their way home 🏡❤️

Almost like a built-in GPS 🧭

Researchers have found that relocated Eastern Box Turtles will often spend months or even years trying to return home 🏡

That’s pretty incredible when you stop and think about it ❤️

That’s also why wildlife experts generally discourage relocating them 😔

The same goes for keeping them as pets 🏠❌

Simply said, wild turtles belong in the wild! ❤️🐢

And if all that wasn’t impressive enough 🤯

The ancestors of modern turtles have been around for more than 200 million years 🦖🌎

That’s older than T-Rex 🦴

Older than some mammals 🐭

Even older than birds 🐦

Let that sink in for a second 🤯

These animals have been quietly doing their thing since before most of the creatures we picture from the dinosaur age ever existed 🌎❤️

So if you see an Eastern Box Turtle crossing the road 🚗

And it’s safe to help…

Move it in the direction it was already traveling ➡️

Then let it continue its journey ❤️🐢

At Pest Detectives, we stop for them every chance we get 🕵️‍♂️🐢

It’s even labeled on the tailgate of our truck so people know there’s a chance we might hit the brakes at any moment for the little guys! ❤️

Because a 50+ year old survivor deserves a little help getting across the road 🐢❤️

If you see us helping one cross the road, be sure to honk and wave 👋

And if you see one ahead of you trying to cross the road, we hope you’ll do the same ❤️🚸🐢

North Carolina’s smallest night lights just came back on ✨🌌

Lightning bugs are officially starting to light up backyards across North Carolina again⚡

And believe it or not…
they aren’t actually flies at all 👀
..They’re beetles! 🪲

North Carolina is home to around 30-40 different species of lightning bugs, making our state one of the BEST places in the country to see them 🌎✨

What’s wild is the flashes you see at night aren’t random 😳

Different species use completely different flash patterns to communicate after dark 🌌

Some pulse slowly 🟡
Some flash rapidly ⚡
Some stay low through the grass 🌿
Some hover high near trees 🌳
and some species can even synchronize their flashes together

That glow is also one of the most efficient natural lights found in nature 💡🌎

Almost all of the energy they create becomes light instead of heat 🔥❌

Most people also don’t realize lightning bugs spend MOST of their lives hidden before they ever start glowing 👀

Before becoming the glowing adults we see flying around during summer nights, they spend months or even years living in:
🍂 leaf litter
🌿 moist soil
🪵 rotting wood
and other damp shaded areas

Even their larvae can glow ✨

Some people even call them “glow worms” during this stage 🪱⚡

They’re also predators!

Lightning bug larvae feed on:
🐌 snails
🪱 worms
and slugs hiding in damp areas

A lot of people in North Carolina also feel like they don’t see as many lightning bugs as they used to 👀🌌

And honestly…
they may not be imagining it!

Lightning bugs depend heavily on:
🌿 moist areas
🍂 leaf litter
🌌 darker nights
and natural hiding places while developing

Super bright outdoor lighting 💡
overly cleaned-up yards 🍂❌
and loss of natural areas can make it harder for them to thrive around homes ✨

Want to make your yard a little more lightning bug friendly? ✨

Try leaving a few darker, quieter spots around the property 🌿
reduce unnecessary outdoor lighting after dark 💡❌
and let some natural leaf litter remain around wooded edges 🍂🌳

And unlike most insects we talk about…
this is one we actually enjoy seeing around the house 😅✨

Because truthfully…

seeing lightning bugs floating across the backyard 🌌
hearing frogs after dark 🐸
and feeling that warm Carolina night air ☀️

is one of the biggest signs that summer has officially arrived in North Carolina ❤️✨

North Carolina’s Most Misunderstood Creepy Crawler 😳🪳

You’ve probably seen them before 👀

Under a flower pot 🪴
Around mulch beds 🍂
Inside the garage 📦
Or opening the crawlspace door and seeing them take off running 😬

And because of those pincers on the back 🦂
Earwigs have built a pretty creepy reputation over the years 😂

A lot of people even grew up hearing the myth that they crawl into people’s ears while they sleep 😅

But in reality…
Earwigs are mostly just nuisance pests that prefer dark damp areas with moisture, shelter, and organic debris 🌎

They’re not dangerous to people 👏

Those pincers CAN pinch if handled, especially larger males, but for humans it’s usually more surprising than painful 😬

What actually makes earwigs interesting is HOW they survive around homes 👀

Earwigs lose moisture very easily through their bodies, so they spend most of their time hiding in protected damp areas 🌧️

That’s why they’re commonly found under:

🍂 Mulch beds
🪵 Firewood
🌿 Dense vegetation
🪨 Landscaping materials
📦 Cardboard boxes
🚪 Door thresholds
💧 Moist shaded areas around foundations

During the daytime ☀️

They usually stay hidden in cool damp areas to avoid drying out

Then at night 🌙

They become much more active searching for food and moisture around the property

And while earwigs mostly feed on decaying organic material and plant matter 🌿 they can also feed on smaller insects and soft-bodied pests they come across 👀

Most homeowners don’t notice them until weather patterns start pushing them closer to the house 🏠

Heavy rain 🌧️
Excess moisture 💧
Or sudden heat and dry conditions ☀️

Can all cause earwigs to start wandering indoors looking for more stable environments

And sometimes seeing earwigs can even be one of the first clues that excess moisture is building up somewhere around the home 👀

Things like:

💧 Water getting into the crawlspace
🚰 Small plumbing leaks
🌧️ Poor drainage around the foundation
🍂 Heavy organic buildup
🌿 Overgrown landscaping
🚪 Small gaps and entry points around the home

That’s one of the biggest things we focus on at Pest Detectives 🔎

Not just identifying the pest…
but helping spot conditions around the home that could be contributing to the problem 🕵️‍♂️

Because sometimes the pest itself ends up leading homeowners to issues they didn’t even realize were happening 👀

A big part of pest control is separating internet myths from what’s actually happening around the home 🏠

And honestly… Earwigs are probably one of the best examples of a bug whose appearance gives it a far worse reputation than it deserves 😅

🎉🕵️‍♂️ We Recently Hit 250+ Followers… And Honestly, We’re Blown Away ❤️🐜

Back on October 12th 2025, we made a post celebrating our first 100 followers 😅

Now somehow… we’re already past 250 🚀

But honestly, the number itself isn’t even the biggest part to us!

It’s the comments 💬
The shares 🤝
The laughs 😂
The people tagging family and friends
And the conversations saying you actually enjoy reading our posts every weekend ❤️

That’s the part we never expected!

Since starting this page in June of last year, our little 20-mile social media circle around Rocky Mount has helped us reach:

🤝 3,586 Interactions

And truthfully… that absolutely blows our mind! 🌎💥

Especially because not too long ago, we had conversations with some pretty big people in the pest control industry who basically told us this kind of content was pointless...

That educational posts wouldn’t get us anywhere...

That we should focus more on “selling” instead of teaching and engaging with people

But honestly…
that never felt right to us!

We never wanted this page to feel like nonstop advertisements 📢

We wanted it to feel:
Helpful 🏡
Interesting 🐜
Community driven ❤️
And something people actually enjoyed seeing pop up on their feed every week

So we ignored the noise and doubled down on what felt right in our gut 💪

And seeing the amount of love and support coming from this community every week makes us feel like we’re doing exactly what we’re supposed to be doing 🤝

Truthfully…
people probably don’t realize how much of ourselves has gone into building Pest Detectives

There have been countless nights staying up until 3 or 4 in the morning 🌙💭
Working on the business
Thinking about the business
Stressing about the business
Trying to figure out how to make this thing grow

Then waking up at the crack of dawn to go start services ☀️🏡

Driving hundreds of miles in a single day 🚗💨

Leaving our day jobs and immediately heading to customers afterward until it gets dark outside 🌘

Trying to squeeze every ounce of energy we have into building this dream

And honestly…
we wouldn’t trade it for anything ❤️

Because deep down in our very being, this truly feels like what we were meant to do!

This business genuinely feels like a gift from God and the universe, a sign that we’re heading exactly where we’re supposed to be!

This isn’t just another job to us

At the end of the day, this is the ONLY thing we truly want to focus on

Genuinely we won’t rest until Pest Detectives becomes the name people all across Eastern North Carolina know and trust… maybe even all of North Carolina one day! 🕵️‍♂️💚

We’re fighting the good fight over here 💪

There’s adversity
Mistakes
Stress
Unexpected problems
Long days
Long nights

But no matter what happens, we stay focused on moving forward and nurturing this thing all the way home 🤝

We’re not stopping until we win this thing 🚀

But seeing the engagement grow every week has made us want to keep pushing harder and making the page even better 💪

🎥 We want to start doing more video content
🕵️‍♂️ More behind-the-scenes field work
🦟 More seasonal pest education
🎡 More community events, local involvement, and giving back whenever we can ❤️
🤝 More ways to support and connect with the communities that support us
👀 Maybe even some ride-alongs and day-in-the-life style videos

We really want this page to become more than “just advertisements”

We want it to be something people actually enjoy seeing pop up on their feed ❤️

We hope these posts make people smile
Teach people something new
Or simply give people something interesting to read during their day 🐜❤️

And to our customers…
we truly hope you’re loving the service so far!

Because trust us…
we are JUST getting started 💪

We are fully committed to bringing people a new era and idea of what pest control should actually be

One where the bar is truly raised
Where customers genuinely feel cared for
And where service actually means something again 🏡🕵️‍♂️

And seriously…
thank you to every single person who has supported us so far!

Whether you’ve liked a post, shared one, referred us, commented, followed the page, or trusted us to protect your home…

You’ve helped grow this thing more than you probably realize 🤝

We’re still small
We’re still growing
But we’re giving this everything we’ve got 💚

And we’re incredibly excited for where this journey is headed! 🚀

If you’ve been considering pest control service, we’d truly love the opportunity to earn your trust and protect your home 🏡🐜

Make sure you follow the page and keep your eyes glued for more content every single week 👀🔥

We’ve got a LOT more coming 😎

🌸 This Mother’s Day let’s talk about one of the toughest moms in North Carolina 🐾

The Virginia Opossum 🤍

Probably not the first animal people think about on Mother’s Day 😅

But honestly… maybe they should be 👀

🐾 A mother opossum can give birth to over 20 babies at once
🐾 They’re born smaller than a honeybee 🍯🐝
🐾 The babies have to crawl into her pouch completely on their own

And when they finally outgrow the pouch? 👀

That’s when you’ll see them riding on mom’s back 🥹🐾

Holding on while she carries them through the world 🌎
Looking for food 🌙
Looking for shelter 🍂
Trying to keep them safe

There’s probably something a lot of moms can relate to there ❤️

🧠 Opossums are also one of the most misunderstood animals we have in North Carolina

👉 They’re actually North America’s only marsupial north of Mexico 🐾
👉 They help clean up the environment by feeding on insects, waste, and decaying animals 🌿
👉 They’re also well known for eating large amounts of ticks 🕷️
👉 Their low body temperature makes contracting rabies extremely rare compared to many other wild animals ❄️

And despite the reputation they get… they’re usually far more interested in avoiding conflict than causing it

Most of the time, when you see an opossum around your home, it’s usually just passing through quietly during the night 🌙

People see something “ugly” or “scary” and immediately write it off 😕

But nature has a funny way of reminding us that toughness doesn’t always look the way we expect 💪🐾

A lot of the animals quietly doing the most good around us, unfortunately are also the ones people appreciate the least 🌎

And the toughest moms in North Carolina might just be the ones carrying everything on their back ❤️

Crazy how fast a season flies by ⚾️🦇

Back in March we sponsored our first T-Ball team!

And somehow, out of all the names they could’ve had… they ended up being the Bats 😂

If Sunday’s Bat post felt oddly specific about kids playing under the lights… well now you know why 👀🦇⚾️

Seeing our name on jerseys right here in Red Oak, in our own backyard, has been one of those moments that’s hard to put into words 🏡

Kinda crazy watching something we built start becoming a part of the same small town we grew up in 🙌

Big congratulations to the Bats on a great season! ❤️
