💀 When these dark figures gather overhead, something below may already be dead… 🖤🌫️
A shadow crossing the sun ☀️
Broad black wings circling above 🦅
And a face that looks like it belongs in a nightmare 👀
For centuries, vultures have been tied to death, decay and the uneasy feeling that something terrible has happened ⚰️🌙
As Halloween draws closer, we’re meeting another real creature behind the eerie reputation 🎃🕸️
Meet the Black Vulture 🖤🦅
⚫ A bare, dark head
🪽 Powerful black wings with pale patches near the tips
👀 And a habit of gathering where most animals wouldn’t dare
💀 THE CLEANUP CREW 💀
Black Vultures feed largely on carrion, the remains of animals that have died
To us, that’s gruesome 🤢
To the ecosystem, it’s an essential service 🌎
By quickly consuming carcasses, vultures help remove decaying animal remains from the landscape 🔎
And their digestive systems are built for the job!
🧪 STOMACHS OF STEEL
Vultures have extremely acidic stomachs that help them digest rotting meat and destroy many harmful microbes 🦠
But here’s the part you won’t forget…
🤮 If threatened, a vulture may vomit its last meal to discourage an attacker or make a quick escape
Imagine trying to scare one and getting THAT in return 😂💀
And those bald-looking heads?
They’re practical! Having little or no head feathering makes cleanup easier after feeding 🖤
But perhaps the creepiest thing about these birds isn’t what they eat…
🌙 THE WATCHERS IN THE TREES 👀
As evening approaches, Black Vultures may gather by the dozens, sometimes even hundreds, to roost together 🖤🦅
Imagine stepping outside to find an entire treetop filled with dark silhouettes…
Dozens of bald heads, all looking down at you 😳🌳
It might look like something straight out of a nightmare, but these gatherings are part of their surprisingly social lives 🖤
🖤 THE FAMILY BEHIND THE FEATHERS
Despite their grim reputation, Black Vultures are surprisingly devoted to one another
Pairs often stay together for years, and both parents help care for their young 🪺❤️
They don’t build fancy nests either! Eggs may be laid on the ground in secluded places like hollow trees, caves or abandoned buildings 🌳
Here’s the darker twist…
⚠️ Unlike many scavengers, Black Vultures sometimes attack vulnerable newborn livestock
They’re not just waiting around for a meal to die
But most of their diet still comes from animals that are already dead 🖤
They don’t bring death…
They usually arrive after it, doing a job most of us would never want 🎃⚰️
So when you see those dark silhouettes circling above North Carolina this October… 🍂🌙
Don’t assume they’re bringing bad news 💀
They might just be waiting for nature’s next cleanup assignment 🦅🔎
And if an entire tree full of them is staring at you…
