On Wisconsin

On Wisconsin

Lake Michigan is Wisconsin's East Coast, and nobody in the state will let you call it anything less. Other states have oceans. Wisconsin has a sea with no salt, no sharks, and a very polite relationship with its neighbors. On the east side of the state, from Kenosha up to the tip of Door County, people wake up, look out at the water, and feel like they own a very nice piece of the planet.

The scale deserves a little bragging. Lake Michigan is the only Great Lake entirely inside the United States, which means no passport and no customs line on the far shore. It stretches 307 miles long and 118 miles wide, with about 1,640 miles of shoreline and water up to 923 feet deep. A Wisconsinite on a beach in Racine can stare across it for an hour and see nothing but sky. Somewhere on the other side is Michigan, which locals treat as a rumor.

The beach culture here is a different kind of brave. A Wisconsin family arrives in June, the sun is blazing, and the water is cold enough to make a grown man whisper a prayer. Somebody wades in up to the knees and announces it is perfect. A child runs in screaming and runs out screaming louder. Grandpa, wearing a Packers cap, stands in the shallows for ten minutes with an expression of deep inner peace and a total lack of feeling in his feet.

Then there is the ferry. The SS Badger crosses from Manitowoc to Ludington, Michigan, in about four hours, and it is the last coal fired passenger vessel on the Great Lakes. The ship launched in 1952 and became a National Historic Landmark in 2016. Wisconsin has a steamship that runs on coal and a lake the size of a small country, which feels about right for a state that also invented the cheese curd.

The shipwreck count adds a touch of pirate flavor. Nearly 35 percent of the Great Lakes' estimated 8,000 shipwrecks rest in Lake Michigan, and a lot of them sit off the Wisconsin coast. Divers visit the wrecks, fishermen swap stories, and everyone in a lakeside tavern has a cousin who found an anchor. Add the lighthouses, the fish boils in Door County, and the sunrises that turn the whole horizon pink, and the lake becomes the best neighbor in the Midwest.

That is the real pride. A Wisconsinite can stand at the edge of Lake Michigan with a brat in one hand and a cold drink in the other, face the sunrise, and say it without a hint of irony. We have the ocean, and it is better. The only thing missing is a bubbler on the beach.
