Last gravestone cleaning of the season! This is the grave of SGT John Lawson Born a slave in state of Virginia as John. Used surname of a slave owner Killebrue/Killebrew

It is reported when he was old enough he became a house boy and waiter. He often served for President Woodrow Wilson’s father, Joseph R. Wilson.

He enlisted in the civil war for the Union in Ill in Company G, 16th Infantry Regiment U.S. Colored Troops. Before he left the Company G his surname Killebrue is crossed out and he last name entered as Lawson, which was adopted surname of his commanding officer.

He was of the first African American to live in Boone County, ILL. He built the house at 320 Locust St, Belvidere IL that his family lived in.

Member of the G.A.R. (Grand Army of the Republic). It is believed that he may have been the only colored man to be considered for this organization. He lived to be 97 years old.
History information taken from Find a Grave memorial # 91462943 there are more facts to read there as well.
