Today marks 80 years since Operation Overlord better known as D-Day. The historic invasion that led to a turning point in World War II. Today the world pauses to commemorate and honor the US and Allied forces that stormed the beaches of Normandy on this day in 1944 in a daring assault that would ultimately lead to the defeat of N**i forces and liberate Western Europe.
160,000 Allied troops landed on the European continent to begin the long battle to defeat Berlin and defeat N**i Germany.
73,000 of those were young American soldiers. They faced 50,000 Germans. 2500 Americans were killed today 80 years ago
The battle began with American and British paratroopers jumping from 1,000 planes. Each man carried up to 80 pounds of weapons and ammunition. More than 6000 vessels delivered the invasion Force. The largest assault from the sea in history. A British historian documented that the Supreme Commander of the Allied Expeditionary Force smoked up to 80 ci******es a day in the days leading up to the decision to invade at Normandy.
This 80th year will more than likely be the last major remembrance of D-Day where service members who landed at Normandy will still be alive. So not only is this a remembrance, but in many ways a final goodbye and a final thank you to the Greatest Generation that ever lived. We salute you, we honor your service and for those who never made it home, we honor and remember your sacrifice.
Today, take a moment, pause and remember. Say a prayer, shed a tear. I know I have.
