Pulled an 18-foot dryer vent “slinky” out of a basement ceiling in Henrietta.

You remember the old slinky toy that walked down the stairs by itself?

That’s what this aluminum flex hose reminded me of - except this wasn’t a toy. This was hooked up to someone’s dryer.

A dryer vent hose is supposed to be a short connector from the dryer to the metal vent pipe. It is not supposed to become the vent pipe itself.

This one was about 18 feet long.

Maximum allowed length: 8 feet.

This style of hose bends, sags, crushes, and holds lint inside every ridge. Add 18 feet of it behind a dryer, and now the dryer is fighting through a long, restricted lint trap.

When we fix a setup like this, the long run gets replaced with proper metal vent pipe. Then we use a premium, code-compliant dryer vent hose only where it belongs - as the short connection at the dryer.

If your dryer takes forever to dry clothes, don’t blame the dryer first.

This is tinder - and I don't mean dating 🔥

This lint wasn't in the vent - it was caked directly onto the motor during a recent dryer lint cleaning in Fairport.

The copper windings wrapped around it get hot every time the dryer runs. During a single cycle, the drum spins thousands of times.

When lint builds up on these components, it traps heat and reduces cooling, causing premature wear.

Dryer lint is tinder. Wrapped around hot copper windings, that's a dangerous combination.

This was a fire waiting to happen.

Cleaning the vent is only half the battle. Most homeowners never see what's hiding inside their dryer.

Most homeowners know they should clean their dryer vent. Not many know what to look for BEHIND the dryer.

This dryer vent connection was barely hanging on.

It had a triple threat of improper tapes on it. None of them are designed for dryer vent use. The constant heat from the dryer breaks down the adhesive, loosens the connection, and allows hot air and lint to escape.

The screw is another major issue. It protruded into the pipe and created a catch point where lint builds up. Screws should not be used to fasten dryer vent pipe together.

Many dryer vent problems aren't caused by lint alone. Improper materials and installation mistakes are common issues homeowners rarely know to look for.

Prepping the wall for a new exterior vent cover.

The old vent cover on this house used a thin, flimsy pipe going through the wall that didn’t meet proper building codes.

We're using our 4.25-inch hole saw to cleanly widen the opening in the outside wall. That extra quarter-inch of breathing room lets the new code-compliant metal pipe slide into place smoothly without getting jammed. The result is a secure, long-lasting installation.

Didn’t plan on spending part of the day army crawling underneath a deck in North Chili 😅 Had to pull apart the lattice just to squeeze underneath this one.

The exterior vent cover was almost completely packed with lint, choking airflow down to just 846.2 feet per minute.

After cleaning the dryer vent line and clearing the exterior vent cover, airflow jumped to 1416 feet per minute.

That’s a massive improvement.

Blockages like this lead to longer dry times, higher energy costs, excess heat buildup, extra strain on the dryer, and increased fire risk.

Do you know what the inside of your dryer vent looks like? 👀

This photo was taken during a dryer vent cleaning we performed in Penfield, NY on a newer home.

This is what a lot of dryer vents look like before they’re professionally cleaned.

🐦 Real-life Angry Birds 😂 They were definitely not happy about getting evicted.

A bird’s nest was packed inside this dryer vent pipe 👀

No birds or eggs were harmed during the service 👍

This customer in Henrietta had a dryer vent that was COMPLETELY BLOCKED. She said she was running multiple cycles and her clothes were still coming out damp.

OVER 3 HOURS to dry a load of clothes 👀 - that’s what this customer in Chili said it was taking.

This lint was pulled out by hand from the exterior dryer vent opening, but the blockage was even worse deeper inside, along with STANDING WATER in the vent from all the trapped moisture.

Screens like this are often installed to keep birds and pests out, but they can end up trapping lint so badly that moisture can’t properly escape the vent.

Pulled all of this out of the bottom of a dryer… looks like it’s been doubling as a coin bank 😂

Coins, lint, and debris build up over time inside the machine, not just in the vent.

Getting everything cleaned out helps your dryer run more efficiently, so it’s not working as hard and wasting energy… which means less money out of your pocket.

Plus, you might get some of your change back too.

Not a bad bonus.

Just replaced an exterior dryer vent cover out in Fairport.

The old plastic vent wouldn’t close, allowing critters to get in.

Swapped it out for a premium magnetized metal vent cover that opens when the dryer runs and seals shut when it’s off.

Keeps anything from getting into the home.
