Tomorrow morning during your daily commute there's a good chance you will encounter one of our school zones. School zones are easily recognizable by the white speed limit signs with SCHOOL highlighted in yellow and typically with flashing yellow lights. traveling above the posted speed limit in a school zone carries enhanced fines.
• Speeding 1 – 19 miles over the speed limit in a school zone will cost you $7 per mile over the limit and $66 in court costs. The DMV will assess four demerits and a conviction will remain on your driving record for five years.
• Speeding 20 miles over the school zone limit is considered reckless driving and is punished as a class 1 misdemeanor. Punishment in these cases is normally assessed by the court and can range from a fine to a jail sentence depending on the severity of the violation. The DMV will assess six demerits in these cases and a conviction will remain on your driving record for eleven years. A court appearance is required.
§ 46.2-873 Code of Virginia addresses maximum speed limits at school zones
As a part of our "Schools Open" Campaign we will have extra deputies and School Resource Officers present in our school zones to ensure the safest possible traffic environment in and around our school zones.
