How To Remove Oxidation From Painted Metal: Using Ox-Knox

Are you a homeowner or professional finding yourself with the task of removing oxidation from metal surfaces?

Whether it’s cleaning rusted iron railings, maintaining security fixtures, or anywhere else on the exterior of your property, the oxidation that forms on painted metal can be challenging to remove without causing damage.

Oxidation is common, but the good news is that there are some easy steps you can take in order to remove it without damaging the paint job!

In this blog post, our exterior cleaning gurus here at Southeast Softwash will explain how to safely eliminate oxidation and how you can use Ox-Knox to keep painted metal looking pristine.

So let’s get the quick answer first before we dive in deep.

Oxidation on painted metal surfaces can be challenging to remove without causing damage. Oxidation primarily shows up as discoloration, particularly noticeable in blues, reds, and greens. Ox-Knox is effective at removing oxidation on metal surfaces, but it’s important to check the condition of the paint before applying it.

With the brief nailed, let’s get started by finding out why oxidation happens on painted surfaces.

Why does oxidation occur?

Oxidation happens when the paint’s protective coating begins to break down, which leads to rusting, corrosion, and deterioration.

Many factors contribute to this process, including exposure to air, heat, moisture, and UV radiation from sunlight.

These elements, over time, can cause paint to fade, peel or flake off, leaving the surface vulnerable to oxidation.

One of the common causes is using low-quality paint.

Cheap paints or those with fewer pigments than premium paints can break down more easily due to exposure to environmental elements, especially on exterior surfaces.

Using high-quality paint can help to protect your exterior surfaces.

Another contributing factor is a buildup of grime, dirt, and other pollutants on the surface of painted exterior surfaces.

These factors can erode the paint’s protection, making it easier for moisture and oxygen to pe*****te.

Regular cleaning of exterior surfaces can stop it from happening.

Painting during the wrong weather conditions can also make it worse. Avoid painting during cold, wet, and windy conditions.

Paint takes longer to dry in these conditions, and moisture can cause the paint to rust much more quickly.

So how do you know if it’s oxidation?

Read on to find out.

Identifying Oxidation

It’s worth knowing that Oxidation primarily shows up as discoloration, particularly noticeable in blues, reds, and greens.

Although cream and white colors are less conspicuous, they can still be affected.

First of all, though, it’s important to check the condition of the paint, because although Ox-Knox is super efficient at removing oxidation on metal roofs, it isn’t magic!

While the product is suitable for a range of surfaces, it may not be able to restore heavily damaged or poorly painted ones.

Exploring OxNox’s Potential

A recent project shows how a 45-year-old metal building shows how our experts deal with this common problem which also stands as a testament to the superpowers of Ox-Knox

The roof, though initially affected by oxidation, showed promising signs of restoration. This was mainly because the paint, concealed beneath the oxidation layer, was still looking good. So we were pretty happy that it could be brought back to its former glory!

Also remember that to achieve the best results, as with any kind of chemical, it is important to carefully follow the instructions.

So how do we use Ox-Knox?

Application Techniques

Before starting, we recommend wetting the roof to cool it down.

We don’t want it drying out. This product takes about 6 to 8 minutes to start working. You’ll notice when it does.

We’ll use our ball valve to rinse and pre-wet. A little water here should do the trick.

For application, a pump sprayer is often preferred, ensuring even coverage.

However, when working with vinyl siding, down-streaming is recommended to avoid any potential damage.

Dilution ratios may vary depending on the severity of oxidation.

In the case of severely oxidized metal roofs, a 50/50 mix of Ox-Knox is recommended to get the best results.

Expert Tips for Success

In one fairly recent example, a customer’s metal roof showcased severe oxidation, turning the roof from green to yellow. The cause was likely to be an overgrown myrtle tree.

So here, Ox-Knox proved effective and crucially saved us from all that laborious manual brushing!

It’s also worth understanding that although you think it might work, using a pressure washer won’t remove the oxidation layer on the roof.

Our ball valves generate a lot of pressure with an impressive 8 gallons per minute flow.

But trust us, it won’t remove the oxidation!

For large-scale jobs, we recommen…

Navigating Family Business: Lessons from Father and Son Duo of Scrubs Soft Wash

Starting a business is never an easy journey, but doing it alongside family, particularly with a son, is a unique adventure with its own set of challenges and rewards. I’m Eric Tilley; I’m a veteran of the home services industry, and a little over a year ago I started Scrubs Soft Wash in Canton, GA with my son, Brock.

In that time, I have learned from our shared venture that there are some universal rules you can apply whether you’re a solo service provider or you have an entire fleet of vehicles servicing your whole community.

1. Set Clear Boundaries Between Business and Personal Relationships.

It’s an uphill battle to avoid blending personal and professional dynamics, especially when it’s family. However, Brock and I always prioritized our personal relationship. We didn’t merge paths because of our bloodline; we did it because of our shared values, complementary skills, and vision. Brock is my son, but if he wasn’t the kind of person I would want to partner with, Scrubs would never have gotten off the ground.

Lesson: If your motivation to partner with family doesn’t go beyond blood ties, reconsider.

2. Determine a Decision-Making Hierarchy.

In every business, especially those with shared ownership, there will be disagreements. How you navigate these is critical. We established early on that, while we own Scrubs 50/50, I would be the one to make the final decision in the event of a deadlock.

Lesson: Everyone should always know where the buck stops.

3. Clearly Define Roles and Responsibilities.

Defining roles prevents overlapping efforts and potential conflict. We intentionally mapped out an organizational chart to delineate our responsibilities. As the business scaled, we were equipped to delegate effectively. It’s allowed each of us to focus on the things that we excel at, while trusting that the other person is doing the things that they’re uniquely gifted to do.

Lesson: Clarity in responsibilities is foundational for business growth.

4. Let Mistakes be Learning Opportunities.

One of the hardest lessons for me was allowing Brock the space to tackle challenges and sometimes even make mistakes. Every error, every misjudgment, they’re all part of his learningjourney. Instead of playing the role of “Dad to the rescue,” I became an advisor and mentor so that he could find his own way. Giving him that space has allowed him to develop his own processes that are often more effective or efficient than if he had just done what I told him “because I said so.”

Lesson: Instead of shielding your partners and employees from mistakes, equip them to face and learn from them.

5. Trust in Each Other’s Integrity and Potential.

Knowing Brock’s character was an essential cornerstone of our partnership. He’s built remarkable leadership skills over the years that I always watched him demonstrate within our home and our family, and among his close friends. By working together on Scrubs, I’ve been able to witness his leadership evolution. This has been especially true in the firm, graceful fairness he uses when managing his friends that are now our employees.

Lesson: Trust in the potential and the integrity of your partners and employees, and you might be pleasantly surprised at the untapped leadership qualities that emerge.

_______________

Starting Scrubs Soft Wash was more than a business opportunity. It was an enriching experience that fortified my bond with Brock and gifted us insights that are universally applicable.

As professionals in the pressure washing industry or any other, the core principles of trust, clarity, and continuous learning are instrumental for success, especially when partnering with family. Embrace these lessons, and you might just find that the journey becomes as rewarding as the destination.

How To Remove Oxidation From Hardie Board Siding

Removing oxidation from Hardie board siding can be intimidating if you’ve never done it before, but with some practice and guidance, anyone can become a pro!

Oxidation is a natural process that happens over time as elements in the environment like sun, wind, and pollution cause damage to your home’s exterior.

By understanding what oxidation is and how to tackle you can restore your Hardie board siding or other material to its original finish.

Whether you’re an experienced professional or just starting out in the world of home maintenance projects, this guide will give you vital tips about how best to remove oxidation from Hardie board siding.

So before we get into the detail, let’s start with the takeaway.

Hardie board siding is a durable material but can be affected by oxidation, it can cause fading, chalking, spotting, and wear and tear, ruining the appearance of the siding. Removing it requires care and patience but can restore the siding to its original look. Ox-Knox solution mixed with water can be applied to remove it

Ok so with the brief covered, let’s start by finding out more about the oxidation process so you can more easily understand how to remove it from your hardie siding.

What is oxidation on Hardie board siding?

If you are a proud owner of Hardie board siding, you already know how beautiful and durable it is.

But have you noticed that your siding has started to change color or become dull over time?

This type of board is a popular option due to its strength and durability, making it perfect for withstanding harsh weather conditions.

However, like all building materials, it can be affected by a process known as oxidation.

This process can affect the appearance and function of siding and can lead to discoloration and ruin its good looks!

Oxidation is a natural chemical process that occurs when certain substances come into contact with oxygen over time.

It is a slow, gradual reaction that can cause rust and decay.

However, it can also affect materials like Hardie board siding, which is made of a blend of cement and cellulose fibers.

When exposed to oxygen, the cellulose fibers in the siding can break down and lose their color, resulting in a faded or dull appearance.

So how does this process ruin your curb appeal?

Let’s find out.

How Oxidation Affects Hardie board siding

This process can have a severe impact on the overall appearance of Hardie board siding.

The major impact can be seen with regard to fading and peeling of paint as the surface of the siding breaks down due to prolonged exposure to moisture and harsh weather conditions.

It can affect your Hardie board siding in several ways, including:

Fading: As we mentioned earlier, oxidation can cause your siding to lose its color and look dull or faded.

Chalking: Oxidation can also cause a powdery substance called “chalk” to form on the surface of your siding. This can be unsightly and difficult to remove.

Wear and Tear: Over time, a damaged siding can become weaker and more prone to damage. This can lead to cracks, chips, and other signs of wear and tear.

So what can you do about this wear and tear on your home?

How to remove oxidation from Hardie board siding

Our experts here at Southeast Softwash tackled a little restoration project on some seriously oxidized Hardie board siding recently.

A hailstorm had left lots of oxidation in the form of spots on the surface. First things first, we could easily tell that it was pretty severe.

No need for a detailed check when it was so obvious you could spot it from the road, it was that bad!

However, the paint underneath looked like it was still in decent shape.

So it’s worth understanding that if the paint is still in good condition underneath, we can restore it, make it look great, and give it several more years of life.

If the paint has failed and is oxidized, we’ll need to remove it before repainting.

Now, we know a lot of you painters out there are scrubbing, and working hard to get the job done! but we’re here to make things easier for you! Whether it’s restoring or repainting, we’ve got you covered.

We played around a little with the ratios to find the best approach.

Our main goal was to achieve a brushless situation. We know that brushing down a whole house can be not only tedious but heavy on your time!

So here’s what we did.

We used some Ox-Knox to restore it, with a mixture of about four parts water to one part solution.

We generally use a pump-up sprayer or you could use an X-Jet pt’ll work just as well. But if rolling is your thing, go for it!

Before we started applying the solution, we pre-wet the wall, working on a small section at a time.

So we applied our Ox-Knox solution, let it sit for about five minutes, and rinsed it off with the ball valve. Pretty easy!

So how can homeowners prevent thi…
