If your lake place sits empty from now until spring, it's the perfect winter home for mice, squirrels and spiders. Quiet, sheltered and full of soft places to nest.

Before you lock up for the season:
• Seal gaps around pipes, vents and doors
• Clear out the pantry, including pet food and birdseed
• Store bedding, cushions and life jackets in sealed bins
• Cap the chimney
• Trim branches that touch the roof
• Have someone check on the place while you're away

Happy (almost) Halloween! 🎃

Hearing things in the attic? Before you call a ghost hunter, call us. The time of day usually tells you who moved in:

🌅 Scratching and running at dawn and dusk: squirrels
🌙 Scurrying and gnawing late at night: rats or mice
🌙 Heavy thumps after dark: raccoons
🌇 Squeaks and fluttering around sunset: bats

One important note: trapping or moving wildlife in North Carolina usually requires a permit, and some animals (like bats) have extra protections. Don't go up there with a trap and a flashlight. Let us identify what it is and handle it the right way.

Here's a quick test you can do this weekend. Grab a dime and walk around your house.

If a dime fits through a gap, a mouse can squeeze through it too. And with the first frost on its way to the Roanoke Valley, they're out looking for one.

Check these spots first:
• Under the garage door, especially the corners
• Where pipes, cables and AC lines enter the house
• Foundation vents and cracks in the block
• Gaps along the roofline and soffits

Steel wool and caulk work for small gaps. Bigger openings and anything up high are better left to us. We find the entry points and seal them, so the problem doesn't come back next fall.

Kerr Lake is sitting almost 11 feet below normal, one of the lowest levels ever recorded, and 62 North Carolina counties are still in drought.
